loud popping noise when changing a track's input during play

so I have this live set set up ("live" as in for a gig) and it consists of a couple audio tracks which play back my tracks, an audio track dedicated to resampling output, and seven other audio tracks each dedicated to a specific effect (and will also sometimes do sampling). the idea is basically that I resample and tweak effects while changing routing, etc. BUT when I change a track's input source, I get this very loud popping noise about 90% of the time. is this normal? is there a workaround? is it a sound card setting, perhaps?

to clarify just a bit more: usually the track I'm changing the input source on is one of the dedicated effects tracks and its volume is all the way down. the source that I'm selecting is always a track that's currently playing audio and has its volume up.
