Mackie ONYX..?
Mackie ONYX..?
I'm in the market for a mixer that has FW I/O.
Any one have any experience with these bad boys?
How reliable is the connectivity between desk and computer?
I'm familiar with the sound of mackie desks, and i'm not looking for midi control from the pots..

Re: Mackie ONYX..?
i've had one for about a year now, picked it up used (the 1220) and then found a great deal on the FW card.Homebelly wrote:I'm in the market for a mixer that has FW I/O.

i'm chaining the connection thru my ultralite to my macbook. never had a problem and all channels work just fine in both live and logic.
the only thing to keep an eye on is the card gain - it can get distorted quite easily (it seems that if even one channel hits 0 they all get nasty). you can always get hotter after the fact.
overall, i LOVE it!
i swear someone asks this everyweek

Could be wrong, but i think the Mackie channels do not include the send signals - there is even some stupid wiring mod that can be done so that you can record with the sends.
I think i might just drop this idea and go with a new sound card...

If you've got spare channels, you just return the effects on channels instead of on returns - that way you can also play around a lot more.... personally I love to have my MoogerFooger Murf chew on the channel which "returns" my delay, and so forth.
P.s I've got a 1220 qnd a 1620 and use them live as well as in studio
LOVE'EM both

Basically the Direct Outs are pre-EQ meaning you can't send EQ'd tracks out via Firewire UNLESS you have the direct-outs modified. The direct-outs are available on either DSUB or Firewire if you have the expansion card.Amanita wrote: Could be wrong, but i think the Mackie channels do not include the send signals - there is even some stupid wiring mod that can be done so that you can record with the sends.
A
I paid a guy £100 to do this for me and now I use an Onyx for all my location recording Firewire'd direct to my MacBook.
I have to say that I'm even happier with the sound than I thought I would be. Good, clean pre-amps, that depending on mics and placement, I found need very little EQ anyway.
I got mine secondhand for £750 including Firewire card.
Nice solid little desk.
Have to say the new Allen and Heath looks very nice as well but will have to wait until I hear some real users opinions.

Yeah.TITBAG wrote:mackie are the only company that understand the concept of 'playable' mute and solo buttons. shame they don't understand the concept of recording over fw WITH eq
SUPPOSEDLY the reason they configured it that was so someone could do 'front of house' etc yet still record unaffected tracks direct to the computer. Hence the 'direct' out term.
I hated having to spend an extra £100 and opening up the desk but, ah well, it sounds good and does the job I intended for it. Still a pain though.
