computer keyboard as controller inconsistency

Post by omosiru » Mon Oct 25, 2004 6:22 pm

it seems like whenver i use the computers keyboard to control an instrument that is polyphonic, if i hold down the 'd' and 'e' keys (that is, on the keyboard not the musical scale, which i suppose on the musical scale would be 'e' and 'eb') anyways...
if i hold these two down, i cannot play any other keys. the instrument is set up for more than 2 note poly, and any other keys seem to work. its confusing, but it seems like a bug.
does this make sense? anybody else experience this? im using live 4.0.4 and osx 10.3.5
thanks
omosiru

hi omosiru

unfortunately you can not play your computer
keyboard like a normal midi keyboard because
of hardware limitations. there is nothing we can
do, sorry.

kind regards,

hello matthias, thanks for your speedy reply :)
how do you mean that i cannot use it like a regular midi keynoard?
it works perfectly otherwise, albeit more latency. i really dig this feature, i like the idea of just using one piece of gear at times.

while im on this topic (although you mentioned there were hardware issues)... it sure would be nice to have a broader keyboard shortcut functionality. i.e.: option+key, ctl+key.....hmm.

ok, thats my issue, and live kicks ass.

Hi omosiru,

with hardware limitation I mean that you
have a limit of keys you can press the
same time, unfortunately. I also heard
of latency problems on Mac IBooks.
Besides that, it works like it should.

for triggering clips you can still use
the key remote feature.

since introduction, we have a couple
of virtous computer keyboard players at
ableton, that's incredible, they play their
notebooks like an instrument :-)

kind regards,

yeah...the ibooks skip every couple of notes played on the keyboard, and other can just trigger late. it's all pretty chaotic, so i've started using it to my advantage when programing beats and melodies with the keyboard with some very unexpected and interesting results.
