if theres one thing that should be improved then its typography..

other font and better hierarchy..

Tastes differ. In my opinion, if there are going to be changes like that, make the GUI openly skinnable in the process. That way people who want chrome and bling would get their share, and there wouldn't be a shortage of clean themes either.

and what program will you then use?

there is nothing out there like Ableton,

it's not like you're dropping cubase, for logic, for performer, etc...

And i prefere when Live can do MORE, in classic flat design, in pink, in old skool 8bit, in metallic surface, in brushed stone, in 2 colors, in whatever you want... but MORE !!

Ok, that's a joke, they're not gonna change the GUI anyway, because it's part of the whole concept. So i don't have to sell it. And of course i agree with your statement...

Forget shading! And fancy decorations. It clutters the user interface.

I've been a Live user for several years. Once I had the chance to try to use Cubase SX 3 and it was really hard because there were many shiny and different things all over the place. I used Fruity Loops and Reason before Live and found Live's interface (the look and functionality) much better. Like comparing a car and a space shuttle... alien space shuttle.. Uh, maybe I should get some sleep before writing to forums...

I agree that some flexibility could make some things possible, but we should be realistic. Most of the time you don't have enough space for instruments and effects of one channel, or the audio and MIDI clip contents, where would you put two or more? I think it would just complicate the UI.

my opinion:

there´s no need for a style change in abletons graphics.

but VERY useful would be the possibility to:

- scale the gui and fonts to use bigger screens which are not so close to the user (which is fact in many studios with keyboard/controller)

- colour tracks to make optical groups for faster recognition

- use multiple screens

this should be possible without changin the existing gui for the "conservative" users

+1 for color tracks - when compared to ie. Logic's use of colors in tracks, Live is a bit behind.

New is good if it's better than current, but if not...

Scalable interface would be good (for example scalable fonts etc)

in 8.0 should be more coloors skn otion becouse all the timewhen some new come in my studio ask my why i'm using for recording in pro -studio FL?????!!! then when some come closer to the monitor he see it's not FL thi is ABLETON this GUI Issweet but should be more color otion it's to dark for me

Just say no to eye candy. I don't want a stupid brushed-metal GUI eating up CPU power and making it even harder to see what I'm doing on stage. If you want a video game, go play a video game. Keep that crap outta Live.

Hooo marvelous ! Alors Mr. musiclee voici le parfait exemple du crétin de base auquel je faisait précédemment allusion.

1. Il a pas compris que personne ne voulait lui imposer un skin 'moche' en alu brossé.

2. Il est tellement calé en informatique qu'il a doit pas être au courant que les Mac et PC ont des GPU qui gère plus de 8 couleurs sans affecter le CPU.

3. il est le seul à confondre Live avec un jeu vidéo, curieuse idée !? (même avec 5 grammes j'aurais pas fait le lien) bref...

Allez encore un que je m'amuse

I like the current GUI.
An heavier GUI will mean drop outs for those with machines that share RAM with graphic card. If Live want's to stay 'Live' shouldn't change the GUI.
However I'd welcome an Ableton Certified GUI schema editor.
I know there's an Open source one but it should be included with the product.

The look of the interface is good as it is, but detachable/multiple piano roll/automation windows would be great.

simple 2D GUI has almost zero impact to system resources. All DAWs mentioned above with heavier GUIs are still much more CPU friendly than Live even with maximum CPU load.
If you use actual version of Live you need very fast (max. 2-3 years old) machine because Live 7 and its engine is very very CPU hungry (as you can see in Performance Test thread).
So please do not speak about GUI impact to system performance because nobody here uses Live with PC 486 system.

I would prefer two schemes - the new and the old one. You can use what you want.
For me, actual GUI is ugly and very heavy to my eyes with all possible skins.... like GUI of Win95. I can work with Logic whole day with no problems. Several hours with Live causes headache
