Stage Image

Post by scott » Tue Nov 19, 2002 6:15 pm

So what do you guys do to avoid the 'guy clicking a mouse behind a laptop' on-stage image? Not care? Jump around with a bag on your head? Perform naked?

So you're telling me that you are cool with looking like a total dweeb onstage?

:P

Most IDM guys do this very thing. Sit behind laptop, strenuously click and poke at something. Certain genres of fans are more intersted in music than a "stage" performance. I'm working on getting some friends to do some Video stuff in real time (check out Isadora, a real time modular video mixing program, very cool!) I don't do this to be a rock star, I just do it cuz I like the music.

I'm not implying that a stage show is necessary to provide good music. Indeed, a visual element shifts focus from the computer operator to something more interesting.

I was just raising the question for the sake of discussion.

That might be fun while in the audience, but I don't want to have to keep track of my set tripping my brains out. "My, the purple elephants emerging from the mouse want me to reboot. Whatever for? Don' t they know that my tinfoil hat keeps out the laser beams from the Insects of Shaggai?"

I agree that a good stage show isn't required, but I do agree something is needed to make a good performance. It's a tricky question. You want to think the music is enough to make people happy, but some people don't agree with that. It goes to the question are you a muscian AND a performer or just a musician. I tend to think of myself soley as a musician, with some ideas for visual elements to compliment the music. I don't even bother trying to think up a "performance" aspect because I know that's not what I am. Kinda cerebral but true.

i actually try to perform in a dj booth whenever possible. people usually don't even realize that someone is actually performing. when they do it's cool and are interested. if they don't, oh well, as long as they are dancing/enjoying the music. i play fretless bass with my live sets so i don't imagine anyone wants to watch a dude with a computer and a bass. although, that's what Squarepusher does and his shows rock! then again, i'm no Squarepusher and his bass playing could probably kick my ass sideways. think i'll just stay in the booth for now

The biggest issue I've found with performing on a laptop is that I get sucked into the screen and cannot interact with the audience. I like to see what people are getting off on, what isn't working, when they need a rest, etc. I've played bass in bands for a long time, so I'm used to being able to look around and stroll about a little.

I actually think if I do live stuff again (it's been a few months), I'll most likely just use the booth. People focus on the music much more than IMO.

I'll be using the booth, if there is one. That's what it's for. Keeps people from splitting shit on your gear, too. But regular concert venues or art spaces don't have booths.

though i don't have a few grand lying about to get one, i always thought it'd be neato to have a projector display the computer screen behind you at a show. that way people can see what your doing. since half the people at a laptop show make music themselves, they might find it interesting, and that frees you up from needing to worry about controlling a realtime video show as well as the music (tricky when you go solo). it'd be a great way to promote live. "hey man, what software is that?". maybe ableton would subsidize...
