Mac G3 and Live

I am using live 4 with my g3 i book, once i get about about 5 audio tracks and 4 midi tracks going the computer starts to slow up and glitch really badly. Is this due to the fact that the g3 processor cant handle this amount going on at once? the cpu meter is only reading 45-50 percent usage.

i use an old graphite imac G3 with no problems at all running full length tracks for dj use (i use anything upt 6 at a time with loops made on the fly and full tracks) with eqs on all tracks and even effects on the sends and have no problems with glitching. its a 600mhz with 256 ram. this has to make do until i get my laptop.

just make sure all other programs are shut down and turn off any extentions you dont use, but even then i dont do that. yet.

another weegie, sweet! so what sort of music are you using it for? maybe we should hook up some time.

dex: i'm using osx on my imac, have been for several years now and doesnt seem to mind the low spec of the imac.

I'd say the only thing that's low-spec about your iMac is the amount of ram. I managed to pick up 2x256MB DIMMs from PC World for £40 in some bank holiday promotion for my DV400 iMac. The extra ram really does help the baby Mac sing...

I was thinking about getting the 1299 1.6 533 FSB iMac... do you guys think that will run Live fine with 256 or 512 MB or RAM?

Thanks for your help. I figured I'd ask since you guys have experience with Macs.

yeah, it should have any problems running live!

Yes the new G5 iMac. Even with 1.6 Ghz and 533 FSB with the 256 MB RAM? or 512 MB will do the trick? I want to have on average 8 tracks of audio running at one time.

You could do that no bother on a G3 900 with 384 megs of RAM... I know cos I do that (and more) on a daily basis

The M-Audio FireWire Audiophile is a good sounding unit, having 6-outs and 4-ins, midi ports and headphone cueing/monitoring. Or go for the FireWire 410 if you want more ins/outs.
