Recorded Automation Gets Smoothed, Loses Breakpoints

Post by timbreland » Fri Apr 25, 2008 8:18 pm

As soon as I stop recording in Arrangement view,

This recorded automation:

turns into this automation which has way less breakpoints:

Why does this happen and how do I keep my automation looking and sounding like the 1st pic? Is there a preference I can set to keep it the way it was recorded?

So... is it possible to turn Automation Thinning on, with Live7?
Without going to options.txt?

i was just trying to recreate the thinning scenerio and I couldn't do it.
Didn't know about manually editing options.txt

Wow I did the Options.txt thing and it worked. Thank you!!! In the doc I typed:

-MidiEventThinning=0
-ThinningAggressiveness=0

Why this is not the default I don't really understand.

Time to look at some more Options.txt possibilities...

..actually I am getting some occasional clicks in the audio with thinning turned off (using operator). Perhaps it is a matter of adjusting the thinning aggressiveness? Has anyone tried messing with this parameter?

okay a just did a small test, messing with the values of x and y in
-MidiEventThinning=x
-ThinningAggressiveness=y

the tracks are labeled 'thinning x y'

seems that y must be set to 0 otherwise MIDI data is thinned no matter what. No luck in adjusting the 'aggressiveness of the MIDI thinning though...

well, I would reckon that thinningaggressiveness only affects the results if thinning is on, wouldn't you think?

Yes that would make sense.

I also tried only typing the thinningaggressiveness command (no MIDIEventThinning) with both a value of 5 and 50, and there seemed to be no change from the above examples where the cc data was thinned completely.

i was very comfortable with this. but now i noticed that too short triggering of buttons on my bcr results in interpolation again. this only happens, when i press a button for a very short time (smaller than 1/4 bar). there is a straight diagonal line now from the point where i pressed the button to the point i released it. and sometimes it even interpolates between two events that are really far away from each other. this fucks up my whole recording...makes me go mad...
anyone having this behaviour too?

ok now i'm really confused - i've been getting badly stepped automation from every midi source i try.
looking at your automation, i see its thinned but still retains smooth flow. not here!

here's how my automation records:

Image

i recorded the data into both cubase and live simultaneously to test.
could anyone explain why my live automation is stepped like this?
quantize is 'none', no plugins used, and the only midi input chosen is my pcr-500.

7.0.10
OSX 10.5.5
edirol pcr-500

sorted this months ago but forgot to update the post.
turns out i was recording the automation in session view, and the Options.txt thinning thingum has no effect in session.
