Believe it or not, that's what i think sometimes. Not that it's rubbish, but on bad days, I definitely have the WTF part. I cease to comprehend what it is. Most likely due to overexposure i guess.

1. Classical - John Cage - " "
2. Jazz - Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - for full-on visceral jazz, always evolving, pushing bondaries
3. Rock - Grateful Dead - for diving head-on into the unknown, and playing music from a place of love, not fear.
4. Electronic - Simon Posford - for the most achingly beautiful, intensely psychedelic, technically superb exploration and fusion of music and experience from around the world and within the soul.
5. Other - Richard d. James - for reaching those places no one else can.

classical: zappa/ligeti/stravinsky/prokofiev (act IV of romeo and juliet makes my eyes go all watery, every time again)

jazz is not dead, it just smells funny... zappa of course/miles davis (bitches brew stylee)

"how many of you feel that rock has gotten entirely too preposterous?" zappa again. he did it all.../i gotta give judas priest credit for wanting me to buy a guitar in my early teens. it was faith no more, ozric tentacles, pink floyd and kong (fabulous, dutch, quadrophonic techrockers) that made me move away from the metal scene.
nowadays it's bands like mogway and motorpsycho, immense or melvins that keep me interested in 'rock'.

electronic: i hated electronic music, being the metalhead i was as a teen, but when hearing jeff mills' waveform transmissions and autechre's tri repetae, my life would never be the same again. i'd say speedy j is my man at the moment.
also listen to zappa on his synclavier or him fooling around with sampled voices way before anyone could afford such a machine.

other: i just don't like world music, apart from arabian/indian... a friend made me listen to a lomax field recording the other day, songs from the angola prison. very beautiful... just like zappa, you'll put a smile on my face when you put on a serge gainsbourg record when i come over for tea.

Ah yes, I forgot about Ozric Tentacles! They definately crossed me over from rock, especially when I first heard Eat Static play at Glastonbury. That Leftism album by Leftfield has a lot to answer for too, Pretty hate machine by NIN also served to break me out of metal mode.

Got into Primus and Fishbone too, whatever happened to Fishbone?

There are too many acts and bands that inspire me to leave any out. So lets just say anything I've ever heard and experienced infuses itself in my music.

let's speak about ppl's musical tastes and influences. so for 5 main musical styles, if you had to pick up only one name, what would it be, and why. the selected musical styles are:
1. classical
2. jazz
3. rock
4. electronica
5. you choose
First post here, mostly lurking as I've been immersing myself in learning Live. And of course, I can't be expected to linmit myslef to just one name per catagory :-)

1. Classical: Xenakis, Varese, and Ligeti have all been huge influences on me, also Messiaen, particularly his Quartet for the End of Time, a total masterpiece of both formal and emotional beauty. I pretty much Love everything up to and including Bach, and a lot of stuff from post 1900, but the middle centuries leave me pretty cold.

2. Jazz: I usually call myself a jazz musician when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to have to explain too much. Miles Davis is huge, particularly from "In a Silent Way" through "Pangaea". "On the Corner" is probably the single heaviest piece of music ever made, along with Dark Magus. Mingus, Coltrane, Monk, Herbie Nichols, as well.

And then there's stuff like John Zorn (actually got to play with him last year, amazing experience), Wayne Horvitz, Elliott Sharp,Bill Laswell etc., people that don't fit into any category, so they get lumped into Jazz by critics.

3. Rock: I keep going back to Jimi Hendrix for inspiration, what a singular connection between a player and an instrument! Led Zeppelin for proving that odd meters could still get you laid. More recently, have been digging stuff on Thrill Jockey, Tortoise, Radian, etc.

4. Electronica: Hard to chose just one again, but probably Squarepusher has consistently blown my mind more than any other, except maybe Amon Tobin. Mouse on Mars is up there as well.

5. Other: I have a huge collection of African music, not Afro-pop but the real stuff. Feal for his commitment to change and pure single-mindedness. Francis Bebey's virtually unkown album "Akwaaba", imagine early talking heads jamming with Pygmies, all recorded on a barely working 4-track. Mbira master Ephat Mujuru, with whom I got to study briefly.

this thread makes more sense when read after the poll of 'how old are you' a few days back....i can't believe the MOR faves coming up, especially in the electronica section. Mid 90's british 'techno' that has aged horribly, and i only listendened to because i hadn't discovered detroit, berlin or cologne yet.....but as long as no one drops king dick Moby's name i won't get too bothered

1)steve reich
2)Jazz, like techno, is more about labels than artists, ECM and blue note
3)thin lizzy/maiden/slayer
4)maurizio or studio 1 by mike ink
5)the flaming lips for being the most inventive band for 2 decades and always pushing the envelope while keeping an ear for the hooks
