Aynone on Dell inspiron????

Post by computercontrolled » Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:01 pm

Id like to know if anyone is using dell inspiron lap top and how reliable it is..i just want it for live performance, maybe to lay down some ideas not as main production DAW, i plan to downgrade to xp. XPS 1530 is my priority but in case i cannot afford it i would go for inspiron 1525.

So id like to know if theres a horror tale behind them or how reliable the are.

I'm using a DELL inspiron in my studio setting. It's actually more than 2 years old now, but at the time I customised it to include 2GB RAM, 7200rpm hard drive, in a 17" screen case.

I've had no problems with it at all so am a very happy customer. At this point there is still no need to upgrade it either ...

(when I do I *might* go for an Apple Mac though - both my kids' computers have been written off due to virusses and dodgy hardware components - we lost 3 PCs within the last year and a half, so I'm a bit hacked off about that...)

3 year old inspiron 6000. It's solid and reliable, but getting a bit on the slow side. Hoping to upgrade next year and will definately consider another inspiron.

Dell Inspiron 9100. 4 and half years of very solid work. Came with 7200 rpm drive and good graphics (ATI Radeon 9700 with it's own memory) built in. 2 Gb ram. XP SP3. Looking to update soon, but it can still handle Live 7 so long as I employ track freezing on tracks with intensive vstis or racks of FX.

Next upgrade will probably be to a MBP though, given the state that Vista is in. Or maybe I'll hold off for the quad core Imac and keep this laptop going a while longer, I still love it and could run Soundforge and Cubase especially really well on it still.

I've owned 5 Dells. 4 were totally rock solid. 1 had a couple of issues but fixed satisfactorily under warranty. So long as you stay away from the real budget end, they are good performers, certainly a lot better than most would give credit.

Yes, Vista is tricky question - those of us who are replying that we run Inspirons well are mostly on XP, which is no longer an option... :(

The only two things keeping me on Windows are [1] Adobe Audition is a fantastic audio editor, and [2] I use MS Publisher loads in the small business I run (and can't find a suitable mac alternative: it's either downwards to Word, or upwards - and a huge cost - to InDesign).

Have you tried open office impress? I have a couple of customers that use it and seem happy with it.

I have a XPS M1330, dual booting Vista/XP. I use Vista for day to day stuff and XP for music only. Most things work ok in vista, but I have a lot of work stuff installed which compromises performance.

In XP, it absolutely flies. I have VST's installed on a 3rd partition and available to both OS's

I found a driver pack somewhere for XP on M1330 - worked like a dream. I reckon it would also work for the 1530

Dell Inspiron/Latitude Series

Post by DJ Mike Beeds » Sat Sep 20, 2008 5:46 pm

I think you would not make a mistake at all, going with a Dell for your laptop. As well as the Inspiron, Dell's "Latitude" series is also pretty solid, some of the best laptops built for their price range. And, about the XP vs. Vista issue, I think Dell could sell you a laptop with XP, rather than Vista, installed as the OS.

Hope you like whatever you end up purchasing!
