When did sequencers become DAWs?

Never really understood the need for the term unless it's referring to the whole set up including hardware and software.

Live, Logic, Cubase, etc are are just components of a DAW.

I think the difference is more to do with what live can do that DAWs can't. ie. performance, recording on the fly, live looping, realtime improvisation, etc.

The concept was built around these ideas more than traditional multitrack recording environment. Although it can obviously do this as well, it wasn't the initial aim of the program, so yes it misses some functionality in that regard compared to cubase, logic, etc.

Some people regard these missing features them as "basic" daw features they can't understand why Live doesn't have, and others see them as unnecessary complexity that would detract from the Live concept. Kind of depends on how you use the program really.

When they started recording audio, I guess?

Yeah, the term workstation implies the hardware set up not the software, but who am I to argue with the masses?

typical american!

hey, consider this motherfucker. perhaps, just perhaps, im so sick of the putrid bile your kind smear all over the net im fighting back. perhaps ive actually met lots of americans and i hate them because they are ignorant wankers. to americans this kind of thought is so alien they cant fathom it , there is surely no way for them not to be the superior master race they truly believe themselves to be. they have to think of things like 'my mother left me for an american' i mean - if my mother went out with an american, she wouldnt leave me because i dont actually fuck my mother like you. i can still see her when shes in a relationship. jesus h cunt 'you guys' are as thick as two short planks.
