OT: Soundsystem opinions

Post by cressy » Wed Sep 24, 2008 3:46 pm

I'm doing the Xmas party for a friend's work. It shouldn't be too lame as they don't want cheesy party tunes, but rather funk and electro, which is always a nice mix :)

However, the office wants me to sort out the soundsystem, though they'll be paying for it. So I've got to present them for some options, baring in mind they'll want to spend the least possible.

So the standard price for a 500w amp and 2 speakers, inc delivery and set-up is about £100. Or I can get a 1.2kw system, with some lighting fx for closer to £200.

I know it depends entirely on the system itself, but does anyone think 500w in a highceiling'ed but smallish venue and about 50-100 people will cut the mustard. I mean - they're not audiophiles or anything, but I don't want it to sound like I've bought my hi-fi along....

do you know what the difference between 500w and 1.2kw is?

All things equal, its less than 4 db

its an xmas party, meaning people drinking, listening to some cheesy music, and occasionally photocopying pictures of their ass.

Rent the best sounding speakers you can afford and put them on tripods.

.
"an" is usually followed by a vowel

for example

an Ice pick

an Open door

as opposed to

a xmas party

you'll figure it out, but please remember an is usually followed by a vowel

I believe the choice between the articles 'a' and 'an' comes down to the sound and not the spelling. In the case of 'xmas' (sometimes pronounced 'eks-muhs'), 'an' would seem to be acceptable.

Cheers.

an CHRIS MAS - nope, doesn't sound good

Looks like it comes down to whether one pronounces "xmas" as "ex-mas" or "chris-mas". That, in my opinion, is where the debate really lies.

Awesome thread hi-jacking - I like it :)

In my head, I'm saying ehks-mas, so "an ehks-mas party" is just how it flowed out. Also, to qualify this, in my mind an Xmas party is a boozy, trashy, generally shitty office party type thing. A "Christmas party" sounds too warm and fluffy to sully with cheap music and nasty shirts, it makes me think of nutmeg and a big oak table full of family and tinsle.

Also - djadonis206 picking at grammar on an internet forum, really?

Finally thanks for the tip DGA I'm now a little less ignorant about the whole wattage thing. Speakers on stands, 500w FTW :)
