many sites have an OT board, and i've found its always worked.

where we do have such a fantastic of community of people here from all over the world, I find it really interesting to explore the immense wealth of knowledge on things not music related. I think it would be fantastic to have a forum to do that. ie, I'm gonna be on the lookout soon for people who might be able to offer me help in getting a job abroad, i bet the people here would be a fantastic resource, even though it isn't a music related subject. if it weren't for the OT topics, i probably wouldn't stick around as much.

however, sometimes I'm in a hurry and I'm only looking for audio related topics. it would be nice to have that separation.

My 0.02,

It's good that Robert/Ableton re-state the primary purpose of the forum.

There's not much difference between marking a post [OT] and posting it in a specific OT category.

Amaury's point re: number of 'on topic' vs. 'other' posts on the General board is a good observation, sometimes it's more, sometimes less, and...

often the mood of the forum is a matter of what bait more people bite hardest on (or not).

thats a great point. often the ones calling the most for an OT forum are the ones that feed the trolls the most.

It only takes a troll or two to bring the whole thing down. This is the fine print of the whole internet ideal, if you ask me.

Don't buy it, there are plenty of reasons why this forum occasionally gets ugly, playing the troll card and getting into it with suspected trolls etc. is one of them. Moderation won't get rid of ass kissers and boring people, so I'm personally glad it's relatively non existent here.
If you don't like it, find another thread, or moderated forum. The fact that most people are pretty civil here, without moderation, is cool to me.

+1 for the civility thing.

Most people on the these forums are good to deal with and really only interested in making good tunes and hooking up with others of like mind.

Unfortunately, the "RTFM" crew put off new users from asking questions which maybe could be easily answered with a quick look at the manual, we've all been there, huh? I guess real musicians don't need to try to assert their superiority by knocking others down.

Even the daftest question can be answered in a polite way - "try the learning exercise on that" or "check out the manual".

Thanks to 95% of you who helped get me going with Ableton, even when I should really have R'ed the FM

There's only one move that takes little community effort and solves most problems. Don't Hijack. It ain't cool. Let the OP own his/her thread and call the shots for it. Let the verbal and pic heavies start and carry their own threads too, but know what to expect. If anybody can argue why Hijacks are fair game, i'd like to hear it.

the point is it would make no difference because the issue is that attention seekers don't get censored.

The people who are the problem would not feel obliged post in an OT section

there is ONE solution and one alone in an unmoderated forum and that is to not respond to these people - they will very quickly get bored if they are not encouraged.

I would say the problem is more that people actually like to react

To the other people complaining about the OT stuff making this board useless: theres a tips and tricks section, You should look at it instead of the general forum.

exactly - people actually want the drama as it passes time like a bas soap opera - that's why people actually respond to the trolls, if they didn't they would disappear

Why not make this forum registered ableton users only, where everyone can read, but only registered users can post?
Maybe that way it get's more music related again?

Maybe it's a bit radical, but now you get trolls, spammers (once in a while)
Anyone who has the idea to fuck up this forum, can join with as many nicks they want at this time.
That way you won't need much moderation (i think) and the abes can sleep tight
