People keep saying this, but its important to back this comment with substance, as in what are they actually the same on???
Mostly they have similar fundamental views on foreign policy, with exception on Iraq and exception on communication.
The major differences may seem small when thought of globally, but we domestic issues are just as important.
There are key things to consider especially with issue to economy...
McCain in the debate says he wants to freeze and reduce government spending. Under republican leadership this means cutting off community based programs (but not including faith based programs). Obviously this is not going to affect the masses, as it is the poorest and most disadvantaged communities that benefit. Many of these communities you will not see voicing opinions in our forums because some do not have access to computers.
Other differences including spending on education. McCain is for a system of education that supports stipends given to families to choose which school to go to instead of funding public schools. While this sounds good in some ways, it adversely affects the poorest communities because even with a stipend, it will not cover the total cost of private schools and in turn reduces funding for supplies, books and teacher salaries, all key to a successful education. If there is anyone one thing this world can agree on about the United States, it is that our education system is lacking.
They differ on health care, they differ on energy, they differ on alternative fuels as a reduction of reliance on foreign oil.
As more and more things that we as a population rely upon become increasingly expensive, and has increasing greatened the gap between the wealthy and the poor, it is these issues people are looking at most closely.
While it is not correct to say the poor would be ignored by either party, it is clear that the Democratic party has the most interest in providing support to those in dire need.
It was a vastly different system before George Bush came into power and after assuming power major cuts have been made to community programs across the country. Much of those funds have been diverted to funding faith based programs and abstinence only programs that have been proven ineffective.
So again, make sure you are clear about what issues you view as being the same, as there is much at stake depending on who is control.
