I was given a free copy of Logic from a friend of mine who worked for a music store - I installed it.

First impression is that it takes up 40 GB of space on ur HD. yes, 40 GB. Fuck that.

2ndly - I've been playing around with/producing with/obsessing over ProTools LE and Live for over 2 years now - and in 2 days I still hadn't figure out how to a.) record a track and b.) send the signal to an effect. - I couldn't figure out how to use the plugins, or the instruments - and this was after watching the damn video tutorials.

I'm sure Logic has immense capabilities, but for those looking for sheer simplicity along with great sounds - Live is better. Logic, to me - was/is a clusterfuck of good ideas - they tried to do too much with one damn interface.

isnt that with all its sample libraries and such though?
the actual program wouldnt take up that much....
i moved to logic from clab back in the day
ive had it since the day it came out....
i just janked it cos apple have completely fucked it up...
hence coming here to listen to all your stupid ass comments...

the environment used to be logics killer feature...
now it seems useless...

they have tried to make it so its easier for luddites...
but have effectively crippled it....

this guy is obviously a beginner and you guys have been awful to him....
you should be ashamed of yourselves....

Logic has the most complex key commands, and is cleanest on the CPU, but it sucks for using as a live instrument. Basically you can write whole orchestral pieces in Logic, and use probably 35% more plug ins, but when you go to perform that piece on stage you're basically stuck playing one instrument over a pre-recorded song.

I've used Logic for years, honestly I lost a bit of interest in it when 8 came out, and Apple fucked the UI up, basically dumbed it down, but besides that there are great things about Logic. They aren't meeting my needs now though, Live does that, and I'm seriously thinking of using Digital Performer as a secondary DAW for live/audio/MIDI editing... and the fact that DP has superior MIDI quantizing to either Logic or Live.

Basically use what works for you, people are stupid when it come to this shit, it's code made by people with a certain agenda, if it matches the way you want to work then go for it.

thats not actually true...
you can easily play more than one instrument...
i dont know if touch tracks is in it anymore but that was a way of triggering sequences off a keyboard, there are many things you can do with logic.....
its still shite though...

Wow, I'm surprised this thread has caused such a strong reaction. As someone wrote above - yes, i'm quite new to computer recording. As we can seemingly agree, it doesn't ultimately matter what you do if it works for you, but I have been doing some reading to learn more and you come across statements like [paragraph about traditional DAW users moving onto Live] ... 'Ableton has witnessed this move into traditional markets, although it has also recognised that getting this client base to completely dump their workhorse working environments, such as Logic or Pro Tools, is probably not going to happen. This is partly because of of habit, but also due to Ableton not being a complete sequencer, digital audio recorder and editing environment.' (Music Tech Magazine - Ableton Live, page 8 ).

You read something like this and think - would my time learning be better invested in a different product? There is no harm in wanting to avoid wasting your time learning something only to later realise that you could have done something better. I'm not coming on here to defend 'professionals' or whatever. I'm just trying to find out if any of this is worthwhile. I'm interested to note that there are professionals using it to record - and i've posted lists of these to anti-Live posters in the past, in an attempt to try and convince myself that my time is being spent wisely, if you look at my previous posts - and I hope that some people are doing everything under one piece of software.

Logic's Mainstage can be well midimized and easily access more than 128 plugin-parameters as far as I know. As such it seems to be a nifty live playing tool!

Yeah how come nobody's mentioned Digital Performer up til this point?

I use DP and I love it, especially for recording and arranging, but also to produce tracks. I also use Ableton to produce and arrange, but mostly for live performance and looping.

I would probably arrange and conceptualize a track in Ableton and then fully realize, mix, render and master in DP, maybe using Ableton as a rewire instrument routed to individual tracks in DP. I like DP's UI more for linear editing, and I like Ableton for jamming, creative inspiration, and especially for LIVE performance.
(Hmmmm, I wonder if that's one reason why they call it ableton LIVE?)

Sean Booth from Autechre once said if he were locked in a room for the rest of his life and could only have 1 piece of software and 1 piece of hardware (besides the computer on which the software runs) he said he'd take a copy of Digital Performer and a microphone.

Just goes to show, to each his/her own, it's just a matter of preference.
