DJ ing with Ableton

Post by baltazar » Fri Oct 29, 2004 1:20 pm

Hi all,

i have a question - Ableton does not support multiple sound cards. That means i have just 1 stereo output + 1 for monitoring.
I would like to play 3-4 audio tracks at once and control it via DJ mix pult ( Pioneer 600 ). That means i would like to control volume, gain and EQ from the DJ mix and not via a MIDI Controller in Ableton. It would be like a "classic" 3 Turntable DJing with DJ mix.

Is there a way how to do this ?

Thanks

Baltazar

you just need a better sound card with more outputs. try the m-audio firewire 410 or something similar.

Yes, you can route the output of each track straight to different outputs on 1 soundcard, without going through the master in Live.
In your case you need a soundcard with at least 3 stereo outs.
In each tracks audio to dialog set the output you need audio routed to.

yep. if you had an 828, for example, you could do this with 8 channels. you can assign as many outs as you have... outs.

Gabriel & Dresden went on record at the Remix Hotel in San Francisco as saying they believe within 5 years this type of software will replace CD's and Vinyl as the perfered medium for DJ's.

RME 9652 with with three Alesis AI-3 provide 24 ins and 24 outs at the same time...

Works fine for live recording of a whole band...

Wiilson and Wilber, of course!!!
Turn up the radio. Turn up the tape machine. Look into the sunset up ahead. Roll the windows down for a better taste of the cool desert wind. Ah yes. This is what it's all about. Total control now.

Ah yes, I love the people on here who have no clue about who the top DJ's and producers in the industry are. "who and who?!". Gabriel & Dresden are at the forefront of using Live in a live situation....get a clue.

Actually, not strictly true. Get the ASIO4ALL driver and set it to control all your audio devices. It will show up in Live as a single device with tons of outputs.

For example, I am using an echo indigo io card (8 outputs) with the laptops built-in sound (2 outputs). All of them are enabled in ASIO4ALL. Live "sees" a single device with 10 outputs (1/2 - 7/8 are the indigo, 9/10 are the laptop sound).

So I connect the headphones to the built-in audio port, the indigo to the main mixer, and set Ableton to cue on 9/10, not solo. Works fine.

Do you get decent latency in this setup?

I read an interesting article in Sound On Sound about Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4) in that at an OS-level you can aggregate sound devices, such as combing two sound cards to present to Live (for example) a new sound device that is an aggregate of the two actual physical devices.

You didn't actually say whether you were using a PC or a Mac.
