High CPU utilisation...

Post by Caz » Fri Aug 13, 2004 4:22 pm

It must be that more Live 4.01 have the same issue... really high CPU util with just 3 or 4 softsynths loaded and a couple of basic (Ableton) effects on some Audio tracks and you hit 100%.... and this on a dual-processor 1.25Mhz G4 (Mac OS X 10.3.5) with more than 1 Gig of RAM.... setting the latency on my m-audio 2496 doesn't help much, even if you put the latency to 25ms or so....

Any tips....? Or do we just have to live with it....?

Thanks! Btw Live 4 is great!

Dell 3.0ghz pentium 4. 1gig ram.XP. audiophille 24/96 sound card. Reasons/live rewired

cpu

well, i can verify this, L4 needs more power than L3. But this only shown in the taskmanager, not in the Live CPU-Meter. But the most "wonder" is, even if the TM shows 100% i can drag some plugs anymore :?

ditto. it's the same on my 1.33Ghz Pbook w/1.25GB of RAM. I can load a few soft synths and effects and that's about it. the Ableton reverb alone sucks up about 10-15% CPU (depending on its configuration)! that seems much worse than 3, I could load a lot of effects in 3 before it choked.

Just like the performance I get on my Intel 286 w/8MB ram? Oh, some of you are too young to remember 286's and 386's.

yeah. maybe it's an illusion but i believe the beta's consumed less.
Keep in mind that you can save alot of cpu by turning off filters, lfo's and such you do not use anyway.

you must have a magic machine, then. the Live 4 specs claim it won't even run on that machine (will windows 98 even run on that machine?), let alone without problems.

weird. but it's good to hear that it's working out for someone. FWIW, I just ran some tests and on my machine (1.33Ghz Pbook) Live will run at most 4 instances of Reaktor while Tracktion (an audio/MIDI sequencer costing only $80) can easily run 6 with room to spare for some VST effects. so obviously Live 4 is not as efficient as it could be.

I think it'saccepted that there is a CPU issue with Live 4.x, be it with the Live CPU meter or the actual CPU consumption, the fact that there is a difference between the two, or the fact that it's just too plain high compared to 3.x for an unknown but vocal number of users!

Can I suggest emailing Ableton direct with this problem and providing useful data to them on platform etc, I did and they are working on it.

Hopefully we will have a solution soon.
