isn't 3.0.4 the latest 3 release? I had no problems with a power book and 10.3. and live 3.0.4

Upgrade from 10.* to 10.3 is not right, It's really better to make one fresh install.......
Format your HD and make one fresh install,
I have the same probleme with audio when I upgrade from 10.2 the last year
