i got some earplugs a couple of years ago (I have mild tinitus in my left ear) and now can't understand for the life of me why I ever went without them.

It just makes sense on every level not to DJ / club / gig / produce / rehearse / etc, and finish up with a screaming numbness in your ears that lasts for days and slowly build up into a bigger, lingering problem. In fact if I forget my plugs these days I'll avoid whatever it was I was going to do. I treat it like wearing a seatbelt - an essential health and safety precaution.

You can get earplugs that you'll barely notice are there and have little to no impact on your enjoyment of music. Mine are called Docs Proplugs, incidentally, and cost about £15. A very, very small price to pay for working ears!

the mild ringing i used to have in my ears seems to have faded now...

i remember one hard techno gig years ago (can't remember what flavour, hated the music) in an old gutted ferroconcrete building... i was looking after ravers who were freaking out on various substances and the sound was so fucking loud that with earplugs AND my fingers jammed in my ears it still hurt! stupid

i'm studying this stuff at the moment... well, i'm supposed to be anyhow...

if anyone has some advice for me it is appreciated. I have noticed my tinnitus around february this year and simultaneously seemed to have acquired chronic nasal congestion. every doctor I go to just gives me a steroid or antibiotic prescription and tells me to use it and come back in a month. I simply want to know my condition and find out if it's something serious but no one seems to be willing to help me or even give me a hearing test before I take the medication for a month which I really don't trust (many side effects). should I just forget about it and live with it? neither my ears or nose seem to be getting better but not worse either. or should I just keep trying other doctors?

I had massive tinnitus some years ago, and went to all possible docs. Did all sorts of
more or less useless therapies. What finally helped me most was:

1) Avoid stress. I am not talking about that occasional short term stress right before
a gig or when a deadline comes closer and things all go wrong, I talk about that
deeper one caused by ongoing struggle with your life. Therefore seeing a good psychologist might not be the most stupid idea.

2) When my tinnitus became really bad I started to go swimming a few times a
week, it helped me to calm down, but also regular sports help the blood circulation
in your body and this is a factor for tinnitus.

3) Avoid too much coffee and nicotine. They are not good for blood circulation.

4) Accept it. This sounds weird, but the thing is, that the more you listen to it,
the more your brain gets trained to regard it as an important message. The more
you are able to find peace with it, the higher the chance that it becomes less.

I had pretty good luck, mine pretty much disappeared. But I also try to avoid loud
music where ever possible and never go to a club without earplugs. Loud music
does not seem to be the tinnitus reason #1 from my experience, but it can certainly
make things worse.

as far as your nose goes, nasal/sinus rinsing is definitely worth a try... basically you wash out your nasal passages/sinuses with an isotonic solution... something like this:

if your ear condition really gets bad, you might want to watch "It all went Pete Tong". Not curing the cause, but helping you accept it as Robert advised.

Only watched it a few weeks back, and without spoiling the end, it would give hope back to anyone deeply into music, and with a serious (if not irreversible) ear condition.

There's a quite hilarious/scary incarnation of coke as well in this flick..

Oh, and while we're at it, go see "Berlin calling" ft Paul Kalkbrenner and your favourite DAW!

well I put water and sea salt solution in my nose every morning because I heard that works. I don't really feel any noticeable change.

Robert makes a good point not to think about it or to condition yourself into accepting it. I would say it doesn't really bother me that much, the only thing i'm worried about is that it could be a condition that NEEDS treatment in order for it not to get worse. It doesn't seem like that is the case reading over most posts here, but i saw some, also in other tinnitus threads that say you should find out the possible idiosyncracies of your condition from a doctor. but all doctors do is telll you to put steroids up your nose and come back in a month.
