metronome overhaul...please

Post by ReasonliveUSER » Thu Oct 02, 2008 10:45 am

I had a small wish here. it is very important to me. can you great guys at Ableton please redo the presentation of the metronome by giving it more depth in future versions of Live? At the top of my head I would love to see these two features added to it.

1) the ability to change the rate of resolution/rhythm of the click. instead of it being the same old standard 4 beats to bar (1,2,3, tick 1,2,3, tick) I would love to have the option to change it to anywhere from wholes notes, 1/2's, 1/4's, "esp 1/8's& 1/16's", 1/32's notes and whatever else could be relevant. this would be a big help and very user friendly to me as I make double time bounce tracks with the session tempo up at 150 but the real time tempo actually half that at 75 and a rushing bar count in & click @ 150bpm would be useless at that point so in a situation like that I would need to adjust the rate of the metronome to compensate.

2)the ability to use custom sounds for the click by either dragging and dropping two audio files( one to be the tick & the other for the tock ) or assigning and routing two midi percussive sounds from the same midi channel(most midi devices set drums to channel 10)

thank you for hearing me out
if you read this and like my idea for a metronome overhaul please cosign and add any ideas

yes, that would be useful.

And i just tried setting the metronome to a slow 6/8 where there are two beats per bar.
But because of what the OP states, Live insists of giving 6 quaver clicks per bar. Its technically correct, but totally destroys the feel of the music so is very hard to play along to. Would be nice with new config settings for the metronome if you could state how many clicks you want per bar and what duration they get.

This is relatively easy to overcome by just making a simple drum clip in MIDI with the notes as I want them. but thats a bit more effort than configuring a metronome page.

Also cubase had a feature where the inbuilt metronome could either generate internal clicks and beeps or send its clicks to a Midi track, thereby triggering any other instrument/sound you like for the metronome (you could even say which MIDI note the two types of click got: eg C1 + D1). That was also a nice feature.

(apologies if this has already been discussed. A search of "metronome 6/8" etc in this forum indicated it would ignore 6/8 and there were 2000+ posts on metronome. so very hard to tell if this had been covered or not).
