How do you temporarily disable follow actions?

Post by msodrew » Fri Oct 03, 2008 9:46 am

How do you temporarily disable follow actions for a particular clip.

I'd like to test out a clip independently, but since it has an assigned follow action to another clip... I cannot hear it again and again to improve it.

Thanks in advance.

disable follow action by setting to "none"

or place a copy of the clip into a session slot with no other clips up or below from it, so it can't trigger other clips.

I was hoping for some sort of right click > context menu that would just say "Disable follow actions for this clip" (obviously the opposite once you have enabled it)

Ableton is already a glorious app... I have few complaints.

+ 1000. I try to convince my co workers since at least 2000 years that
we need a function for globally disabling follow actions.
Will try again !

you can use dummy clips to emulate follow actions if you need to disengage and reengage the follow actions.

Let us know who we should send our letters to. :D
Ableton’s engineers are hard
at work developing code that will allow our software to predict the future, but we don’t
anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

I love the idea too.

For anybody that has ever worked in the autocad environment, another tool I constantly wish for is a paint brush tool, to match properties from one entity to another, be that clips...racks...instruments, with a right mouse click that turns on/off the fields of properties you want to match. This tool would really be useful for matching follow actions and other clip properties.

Lots of software uses a paintbrush tool, but once you use it on a day to day basis like in autocad, it becomes the tool that every day speeds up your work more than any other tool. Especially when starting out with templates.....it also helps to keep some sort of standards of operation from file to file.

follow actions is a GREAT feature, why they didn't make it midi assignable is beyond me.

Robert - please slap them on the back of the head for me, you can blame it on me.

totally! It makes total sense to be able to loop a small portion of the song for a while, but that's pretty much impossible with follow actions involved. it's very frustrating!

Also in this category of navigating session view are the clip nudge buttons. There needs to be an option for them to effect every clip. That why you could even loop on the fly by change the global quantize to and nudging backwards. This way also you can skip all through your song without getting the clips out of time.

Yes! right click disable follow actions! You should be able to do it by scene too. right click the scene in the master track and disable all follow actions would be perfect.

Robert, I know from conversations with you that you also welcome this:

Follow Actions when clip ends

My refinement:
Fields to enter time variants so there could be time before the follow action is executed.

For example:
End + 00:00:00 (hours, minutes, seconds)

Also useful: some quick presets:
End + 1 second
End + 15 seconds
End + 30 seconds
End + 1 minute
etc.

While there may be a work around, this would be so immediate & helpful.

One of my most popular Max4Live devices is Follow which does exactly this!
