Thanks, but kiss-box is another hardware/expensive solution and, as mentioned above, for much less money, I could buy a usb-midi cable for the PC and just give up on trying to sync over lan/ethernet...

It just surprises me that no-one has a free and quick solution that they've actually been using in real-life already, like:

Phase 1: Connect mac to pc via cross-over cable
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit

I appreciate all the suggestions so far, but does anyone on here actually have a simple solution that they've already used successfully?

I guess if there was such a free cross-platform solution then ipMidi wouldn't cost 69 Euro. ;)

And that RTP-Midi I was quoting is only free on Mac, but you could try downloading the Kiss-Box driver and see wether it can be used without the box!? It should work when connecting a Mac to it, because it is in fact the very same protocol, just that you are using a Mac instead of the Kiss Box to send the data.

There is some guy called "Tobias" who claims to have written a Windows RTP-Midi driver "just for fun" that is working when connecting a Mac. He is discussing that here (german forum):

Maybe you can email him via that forum.

It's funny, as there so many "how to sync two computers" threads on here, but when it gets to specifics, it appears no-one can say, "ah yes, mac to pc over ethernet, just do a, b & c, it worked for me".

I'm just a little surprised that there aren't already a whole bunch of Live users for whom this is a tried and tested, no-brainer.

Maybe those who got it working are just too busy making music with their working set-ups, rather than checking forums...

It's also possible that no one has got it working.

Just to close this thread in case anyone else is looking to do the same thing: as it turned out that no-one had really got it working, I gave up and bought a usb-midi cable - works rock solid.
