Question on Live Looping with Axiom 25

Post by yz3 » Fri Oct 17, 2008 8:23 pm

I'm diving into live looping and read this how-to:
http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20174

I have a question about setting up my Axiom to use the trigger pads. What buttons need to be mapped on Live so I can for example start and stop recording using one trigger button? Then on track 2 I can use a different pad to start/stop.

That depends how you have your pads set up. I believe that you can have them set up to send a note-on, or to send a CC, or to toggle a CC (send alternate values each time it's pressed). If you have it set up for note-on or CC, then just map a pad to the first slot in the track. When you press, it will start recording, and when you press again it will switch to playing.

I got the same midi keyboard. It's pretty handy for travelling around with, one thing that lets it down is I can't assign the controllers to anything in Ableton, how do you get round that problem? When I assign them things go a bit random when knob twisting. It jumps about all over the place.

Actually, yea that's what I would like to do. I want to start recording when I hit a pad and when it's hit a second time to stop and automatically play. That way I can setup the other 7 pads to control 7 more tracks the same way. Is this the common way people have it set up when doing live looping?

Ok, so can I set everything up like this dude using my Axiom 25?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAA3PkWBHuY

Notice he's doing everything with a single momentary footpedal and using midimapper. The only thing is he's using MIDI tracks rather than Audio tracks... however I don't see why that would be a problem.

I can't see that video, but you probably want to read this tutorial about live looping:
http://www.bome.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1583

You'll have to look in the Axiom 25 manual about how to make sure the pads are doing what you want them to do, I don't remember (I sold that thing a while ago because I hated the endless rotary enocders) how to program the pads to send a single message.

That looks pretty dead on with what I want and is very similar to the youtube video I posted with one exception. The dude in the video is using a foot pedal to control loops and go to the next track rather than having to push a trigger button. But I might be able to get around this if I plug my foot pedal into the Axiom?

Thanks for the link

Oh, you dont' need to worry about footpedal vs. trigger pad. It's all just MIDI signals. The first thing you need to do is make sure your Axiom 25's pads are sending the same MIDI message every time you press it. Then just follow the instructions from the tutorial on how to set up the looping.

You don't need an extra footpedal. Can do it all with the axiom.

I do live looping using just the axiom as a controller

Use midi mapping ( ctrl M on pc or command M on mac) to assign the clip or track launch ( play/stop) button to the axiom pad.
