How do you set an audio loop's length before recording it?

Post by jamctelex » Sat Oct 18, 2008 10:39 pm

Is there a way to set a blank loop to record audio to? I am trying to pull off recording guitar live by listening to a click track and recording a loop. When I have the grid set to one bar, it's great because i can set it to record a few beats before I need to start playing, but is there a way to make it so recording stops and loops after a set period of time instead of me having to push another button? It's pretty easy to do this with MIDI, but I still can't figure out how to do it with audio.

it seems like you're implying you use your hands to start and stop the loop. if so:

get a midi foot pedal and free up your hands for the guitar. it's seriously the best way if you're looping guitar on the fly.

set up a button to trigger the clip in which you want to record. push once to start, push again to stop whenever you want it to (1, 2, 4, etc. bars). it's only one more button push (and it's the same button), and might be easier than somehow telling it to stop on its own after a specified length of time.

yeah, i know i can use a pedal, but, really i want to avoid dragging these things around. this is an issue of trying to carry everything i need on the subway. if only there were a way to set a specific bar to punch out of.

anybody know of any?[/quote]

seems you've found this other thread:

so double clicking with global quantize set to your desired length should work, for the most part. but then if you have global set to 2 bars and you only want a 1 bar loop you're SOL.

as for the pedal, i understand your desire to keep your gear to a minimum, but there are several midi foot pedals/buttons that are quite small and portable these days. you might be able to fit it in your bag with your laptop or in your gig bag with your guitar. Just a thought....

Good luck.
