Bread. Alternatives?

Post by UKRuss » Tue Oct 21, 2008 8:26 am

I am sick and tired of all my meals revolving around bread. It's clogging me up.

What tasty alternatives are there?

If you've happen to have a 'wheat allergy' which a lot of people do btw, bread will make you feel 'sick and tired'. Try Rice Cakes/Crackers.

I suppose i do get tired....I don't know about sick. Breads just easy isn't it? Toast fo' breakfast, sandwich fo' lunch etc.

Rice cakes and jewish bread, OK I'll try those.

What about those tortilla wraps, are they made with something different, i think they're still wheat flour aren't they?

A couple of nights ago we substituted the tortilla wraps for the burritos with lettuce leaves. They made great 'pockets' to put all your bits in and made a nice change. We all decided that we would do this again instead using the bread based wraps. :D

Bread-free cheese and ham sandwich:

Simply place some sliced cheese between 2 slices of ham. No bread required.

Works best if ham is cut nice and thick.

Get some rotis/chappatis from Indian grocery (making them yourself takes some skills) and you can make wraps with them-put whatever you want inside-Tomates, any vegetables, and just roll it. I even make kind of Indian/US fusion peanutbutter/banana/jam. Paste made of Avocado, chopped chillis and some other spices is my fav.
In India poor people eat whole wheat and rich made of white flour, actually those poor mans taste better and are healthier. So ask for "ätta"
Unlike bread it wont make your swell. My doc told me bread+sitting lots at computer is bad combination, bread makes your stomach swell with air so you look more obese then you really are, not to mention enviromental hazards (that air has to go one way or the other)

It is best to avoid all grain foods. Try is for 8 weeks. You find how much inflamation you've been holding on to and how much better you can breath. Gluten is rather nasty too.

oh, and a good alternative to bread would be anything else, like maybe a stiff drink or rugby.

Due to a wheat allergy, we have a mostly bread free diet, and frankly don't miss it much. Some things we eat regulary:

- fresh iceberg lettuce works pretty well as a burger bun which doesn't mess with the classic burger "flavor" and can be a fun alternative;

- Wasa rye crispbreads are better-than-expected sandwich alternatives which are strong enough to hold meat, cheese, avocado, tomato, etc. on single pieces;

- alfredo sauce over steamed broccoli is a delicious alternative to pasta, and there is rice pasta if one wants a more traditional pasta dish;

- Pamela's wheat-free waffle and brownie mixes are pretty darn good, healthy or not;

- health food stores like Whole Foods carry wheat free cookies, like tofu chocolate chip cookies, which are also much better than one would expect.

Good luck with it! :wink:
