These are simply as senator. So, not to mention the youngest and first black president of the Harvard law review among others.....
Obama passed legislation with Republican Senator Jim Talent to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps. The tax credit covers 30 percent of the costs of switching one or more traditional petroleum pumps to E85, which is an 85 percent ethanol/15 percent gasoline blend.
-After a number of inmates on death row were found innocent, Senator Obama worked with law enforcement officials to require the videotaping of interrogations and confessions in all capital cases.
-His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.
-Obama created the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income working families in 2000 and successfully sponsored a measure to make the credit permanent in 2003. The law offered about $105 million in tax relief over three years.
-Obama joined forces with former U.S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) to pass the toughest campaign finance law in Illinois history. The legislation banned the personal use of campaign money by Illinois legislators and banned gifts from lobbyists. Before the law was passed, one organization ranked Illinois worst among 50 states for its campaign finance regulations.
-As a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Senator Obama has fought to help Illinois veterans get the disability pay they were promised, while working to prepare the VA for the return of the thousands of veterans who will need care after Iraq and Afghanistan.
-He traveled to Russia with Republican Dick Lugar to begin a new generation of non-proliferation efforts designed to find and secure deadly weapons around the world.
-Obama has been a leading advocate for protecting the right to vote, helping to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act and leading the opposition against discriminatory barriers to voting.
- In the U.S. Senate, Obama introduced the STOP FRAUD Act to increase penalties for mortgage fraud and provide more protections for low-income homebuyers, well before the current subprime crisis began.
-Obama sponsored legislation to combat predatory payday loans, and he also was credited with lobbied the state to more closely regulate some of the most egregious predatory lending practices.
-Barack Obama introduced the Patriot Employer Act of 2007 to provide a tax credit to companies that maintain or increase the number of full-time workers in America relative to those outside the US; maintain their corporate headquarters in America; pay decent wages; prepare workers for retirement; provide health insurance; and support employees who serve in the military.
-Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.
-Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.
-Obama and Senator Feingold (D-WI) took on both parties and proposed ethics legislation that was described as the "gold standard" for reform. It was because of their leadership that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips became part of the final ethics bill that was signed into law.

Whatever McCain was 8 years ago, or even 5, is dead. He is a skin-puppet for Karl Rove now, who rides the bus with him.
There is always socialism, you just have to decide who gets it. Even in a libertarian world, the government would end serving those with power.
Right now, we live under a corporate socialist regime.
Who can argue this when laws are often passed as written by the corporations who lobby for them?
The 'conservatives' have wasted enough money on wars, foreign and domestic defense contracts and enormous, and megalithic bureaucracies like home land security for us to all have health care that works.
But - when it comes time to market the idea of public health care, it's all fear of communism. Liberals may want socialist democracy like many Nordic countries have, but it is the powerful in the USA that have their eye on our landlord, China.
China, where workers live 10 to an apartment and get paid change to bust their ass while the government enforces the rules of the corporations on the people.
Fiscal conservatives are just as fucked as social conservatives.

metafactor wrote:Articulate in his reasoning, without citing a record? Oh wait, Obama has "substance". That's nothing more than fluff. Come on, you can do better than that.
Why don't you educate me on his qualifying accomplishments. You seem to think you're an educated voter. Let's hear it. You can't, can you. That's ok. Just chill, you'll get over it. Pressing submit now.
I hope you understand when I simply refer you to knotkranky's post for a list of accomplishments...
Look, we've been defending Obama, so far (successfully)... why don't you list all the reasons you're voting otherwise? Seriously, help us out and key us in on why your choice is the best choice.
I said nothing about you being a racist... But I most certainly will say that the recent attacks on Obama which call him a terrorist, levy death threats against him at rallies etc would not be happening if he were white (all white). There is a lot of racism in this country and now that Obama is all but assured of winning the election, it is rearing its ugly head.metafactor wrote:So, because I think someone is socialist in their views, that now makes me a racist? Talk about stereotyping. BTW, I think it's interesting that when the great and mighty Colin Powell endorsed his choice, he cited every reason except for experience or record. But we'll just ignore that for now and push it under the rug like we've been doing. Hush hush.
As for you thinking Obama is a socialist, you can think what you like, but saying so shows that you just do not know anything about socialism. It is about the same as if you were trying to claim that a bench scrub was the best player in the NBA. The people who know the sport would not take you seriously.
btw, I am not a fan of Obama, but seeing the sort of ridiculous things being said about him, and the threats etc, makes me want to say something on his behalf.
You might read what socialists are saying about Obama and visit the World Socialist Website (well written and informative site btw)metafactor wrote:So, because I think someone is socialist in their views...

Search for Obama, then Biden... read a few articles. Then you might have the beginning of an understanding why calling Obama a socialist is so laughable. (he is more right than left even though many on the 'left' have illusions about him and have really forgotten what an actual progressive platform is [see Nader site] but that is another story)
A number of socialists write on Counterpunch too. For example
If Only McCain's Charges Were True - Why I'm Not Voting for Obama

Ok, someone is finally catching on and posting some positive things on O's record. Took a while. Thank you Knot. I honestly appreciate your work.
Elxicano..
Even though you were perhaps too lazy to post even one of Obama's accomplishments on your own and desperately waited on someone to come to your aid, I've decided to reward you anyway with something very small. You've worked very effortlessly to deserve this.

Web Archives Confirm Barack Obama Was Member Of Socialist 'New Party' In 1996
UPDATE: WE WILL POST AT LEAST ONE MORE SOURCE COMING TOMORROW! Subscribe to feeds or bookmark page.
In June sources released information that during his campaign for the State Senate in Illinois, Barack Obama was endorsed by an organization known as the Chicago "New Party". The 'New Party' was a political party established by the Democratic Socialists of America (the DSA) to push forth the socialist principles of the DSA by focusing on winnable elections at a local level and spreading the Socialist movement upwards. The admittedly Socialist Organization experienced a moderate rise in numbers between 1995 and 1999. By 1999, however, the Socialist 'New Party' was essentially defunct after losing a supreme court challenge that ruled the organizations "fusion" reform platform as unconstitutional.
After allegations surfaced in early summer over the 'New Party's' endorsement of Obama, the Obama campaign along with the remnants of the New Party and Democratic Socialists of America claimed that Obama was never a member of either organization. The DSA and 'New Party' then systematically attempted to cover up any ties between Obama and the Socialist Organizations. However, it now appears that Barack Obama was indeed a certified and acknowledged member of the DSA's New Party.
On Tuesday, I discovered a web page that had been scrubbed from the New Party's website. The web page which was published in October 1996, was an internet newsletter update on that years congressional races. Although the web page was deleted from the New Party's website, the non-profit Internet Archive Organization had archived the page.
From the October 1996 Update of the DSA 'New Party':
"New Party members are busy knocking on doors, hammering down lawn signs, and phoning voters to support NP candidates this fall. Here are some of our key races...
Illinois: Three NP-members won Democratic primaries last Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary)."
Link To The New Party Update
Beyond the archived web page from the Socialist New Party is the recognition by the "Progressive Populist" magazine in November 1996 that Obama was indeed an acknowledged member of the Socialist Party.
"New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago. "
Link To The November 1996 Progressive Populist Article
The Democratic Socialist Party of America published in their July/August Edition of New Ground 47 Newsletter.
"The Chicago New Party is increasely becoming a viable political organization that can make a different in Chicago politics. It is crucial for a political organization to have a solid infrastructure and visible results in its political program. The New Party has continued to solidify this base...
the NP's '96 Political Program has been enormously successful with 3 of 4 endorsed candidates winning electoral primaries. All four candidates attended the NP membership meeting on April 11th to express their gratitude. Danny Davis, winner in the 7th Congressional District, invited NPers to join his Campaign Steering Committee. Patricia Martin, who won the race for Judge in 7th Subcircuit Court, explained that due to the NP she was able to network and get experienced advice from progressives like Davis. Barack Obama, victor in the 13th State Senate District, encouraged NPers to join in his task forces on Voter Education and Voter Registration."

Obama's membership within the 'New Party' is disturbing as even Green Party members attacked the DSA and New Party as nothing more than a fringe group. The New Party had hoped to implement Socialist Rule in the United States and was established to counteract the influence of a Democratic Party that they viewed as too moderate and too centered. Now it seems that nearly 10 years after the socialist party fell apart, their strategy of upward growth has reached the White House. Obama's ties to the DSA's New Party is beyond just an association it is outright membership, as clearly defined by the parties August 1996 newsletter, in an outright Socialist organization.

jesus - even if Obama was a socialist - that;s probably exactly what you need in the US - stop fucking over the poor and making it so that nobody can afford healthcare then people might be able to afford their mortgages and prevent things like the latest economic problems which ended up costing the US tax payers so many billions anyway - isn't the whole talk of tax cuts completely nonsensical now?
why don't the republicans just cut to the chase and put on all their campaign messages "vote for McCain because Obama is the Bogey man"

I've said before and I'll say it again... one-on-one, McCain is a decent and charismatic individual whom I simply do not agree with. His views are outdated by many standards and in my opinion are just wrong for this country.
Once again, I ask you to provide your case for someone other than Obama and I'm daring you to try and do it without attacking Obama, since he's not the only one running for candidacy.
I'll also remind you that McCain has 26 years of experience and whole lot of dirt to dig up. If you really want to play this game we can. I've dropped 2 article excerpts to keep you busy on him being a racist and of him palling around with terrorists... keep mind this stuff barely scratches this surface and truthfully amounts to nothing more than "tit-for-tat" and more importantly I don't care for it one bit. I've only added it to show the point that there is plenty of information out there, its relevance to governing is arguable for both candidates.
in the Abes forums, much has continually been posted about his record already. Just because you haven't seen it does not mean no one has not added it. Once again I dare you to post reasons and rational for your favored candidate.
Lastly, I know you think I have added no effort to this discussion, I beg to differ. I have been eagerly prompting you to add something intelligent, and have continually been disappointed, however, when you're ready for an actual discussion, please let me know, otherwise have fun with the following and let me know when you want more....
The following taken from: http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cont/node/10086
John McCain, a member of the House of Representatives in the mid-1980s, often held court at a table near the bar at Bullfeathers, a popular Capitol Hill watering hole, telling jokes and matching hangers-on drink by drink.
As a Capitol Hill chief of staff, I often drank at Bullfeathers and was invited to join the throng at McCain's table one evening. A few minutes listening to the racism, bigotry and homophobia of the Arizona Congressman told me all I needed to know.
McCain loved to tell jokes about lesbians, blacks, Hispanics and the Vietnamese community that occupied a large section of Arlington County, Virginia, just south of the District of Columbia.
Of course, McCain didn't use polite language in the jokes: He used names like "fags" or "queers" or "dykes" or "niggers" or "spics" or "wetbacks" or "gooks."
A typical McCain joke (overheard at Bullfeathers):
Two dykes are talking at a bar and one leaves. As she walks toward the door, the other watches her leave and says out loud: "God, I've love to eat her out."
Two men are standing near by and one turns to the other and says: "I'd like to do the same. Guess that makes me a dyke."
Or another (also overheard at Bullfeathers):
Question: Why does Mexican beer have two "X's" on the label?
Answer: Because wetbacks always need a co-signer.
(McCain has a documented history of lesbian jokes. He's also come under fire for other jokes about rape.)
Exampe:
Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because Janet Reno is her father.
Another example:
Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, ‘Where is that marvelous ape?’
When he ran for the Senate, I attended a gathering of GOP operatives at the National Republican Senatorial Committee where McCain outlined his campaign strategy:
I play to win. I do whatever it takes to win. If I have to fuck my opponent to win I'll do it. If I have to destroy my opponent I won't give it a second thought.
McCain's so-called sense of humor has no limits when it comes to simple human decency. Shortly after former President Ronald Reagan announced he had Alzheimer's Disease, McCain told this joke at a GOP Fundraiser:
Do you know the best thing about having Alzheimer's?
You get to hide your own Easter eggs.
Even his wife is not immune. Writes Cliff Schecter in his book, The Real John McCain:
Three reporters from Arizona, on the condition of anonymity, also let me in on another incident involving McCain's intemperateness. In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.
John McCain pal’s around with terrorists (Source: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carl-bern ... 34256.html):
Does John McCain "pal around with terrorists?"
Certainly McCain's continuing "association" and relationship with the convicted Watergate burglar and domestic terrorist G. Gordon Liddy might suggest that is the case, if we are to apply the standards drawn by the McCain campaign.
In 1998, Liddy gave a fundraiser in his Scottsdale, Arizona home for McCain's senatorial re-election campaign -- the two posed for photographs together; and as recently as May, 2007, as a presidential candidate, McCain was a guest on Liddy's syndicated radio show. Inexplicably, McCain heaped praise on his host's values. During the segment, McCain said he was "proud" of Liddy, and praised Liddy's "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great." From the program:
LIDDY: Your experience in the Hanoi Hilton is remarkable. I mean, I put in five years in a prison [for masterminding the Watergate burglary, and associated crimes], but it was here in the United States, and they didn't torture - the only torture that I had was being forced to listen to rap music from time to time.
McCAIN: Well, you know, I'm proud of you. I'm proud of your family. I'm proud to know your son, Tom, who's a great and wonderful guy. And it's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon. And congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.
Which of Liddy's "principles and philosophies" was McCain referring to? Liddy's advocacy of break-ins? Firebombings? Assassinations? Kidnappings? Taking target practice with figures nicknamed Bill and Hillary?
During the same period that Bill Ayers was a member of the Weather Underground, Gordon Liddy was making plans to firebomb a Washington think tank, assassinate a prominent journalist, undertake the Watergate burglary, break into the office of Daniel Ellsberg's psychiatrist, and kidnap anti-war protesters at the 1972 Republican convention.
I've said before and I'll say it again... one-on-one, McCain is a decent and charismatic individual whom I simply do not agree with. His views are outdated by many standards and in my opinion are just wrong for this country.

Re: OT: Palin for president
you know what - the first comment I was going to make in this thread was "you realise within a page or two this thread will actually be about Palin as president"brightonalex wrote: http://www.palinaspresident.us
First Obama is an Islamic Jihadi, now he is a Marxist. Perhaps you should consider the treatment Marxists receive in Iran, Egypt, Iraq, etc. You cannot be both dude!metafactor wrote:Ok, someone is finally catching on and posting some positive things on O's record.
This one can be found at http://politicallydrunk.blogspot.com/20 ... a-was.html
I wish Obama were a socialist, but there is nothing to support that idea but some alleged ties to the New Party. It is a laugh to read some right wing sites calling the New Party radical! hehehe... You can barely call it socialist. It was mostly some democratic party members who were slightly to the left of the democratic party at the time. Whether some up and coming democratic party politician named Obama was endorsed, or even made use of them as a stepping stone to get ahead, says nothing about his political views other than he may be ambitious.
These sorts of claims are fearmongering, trying to scare people in a desperate effort to stop a landslide Obama victory. Obama does not talk like a socialist. He does not vote like a socialist. He has never run as a socialist. He does not surround himself with socialist advisers. His economic and foreign advisers are all dyed in the wool capitalists. He is heavily funded by Wall Street. People with a net worth over $10 million support Obama 2-1 over McCain.

Someone is posting very little original content, maybe a sentence or two, and getting you guys to go off for pages. There's a word generally used to describe that type of behavior.
Notice how Palin is NEVER brought up, even though it's obvious to anybody with half a brain that of the four people who have a chance at being president in the next four years, she's the least qualified, and most dangerous. But hey don't let me spoil it for you guys, have fun letting some jackass derail the original point to make half baked claims against anybody but Palin.
