elektron machinedrum sps-1 sps-1 uw mkI mkII, I'm confused

Post by Johnisfaster » Sun Oct 26, 2008 11:44 pm

ok so elektron machinedrum first edition was sps-1 then they put out sps-1 mkII, is the sps-1 mkII going to have the uw (sampling features) or is that only if it says UW in the name?

the reason I ask is that on ebay you see a lot of machinedrums come and go and I never can tell which ones are going to have the sampling and which ones don't. I'm sure someone can easily break it down for me.

there is a two different models both old and new, SPS-1 (non UW) and SPS-1UW. the MKI and MKII's just refer to the edition. does that make sense?

there here is:

sps-1
sps-1 UW
sps-1 mkII
sps-1UW mkII

hope that helps.

There was the SPS-1 and the SPS-1UW intially, then last year Elektron had to upgrade the internals after their suppliers ran out, and they came out with the newer SPS-1 mkII and SPS-1UW mkII. So there's UW versions of both the older machinedrum and newer machinedrum, but the mkII mark doesn't neccesarily mean "UW". Make sense?

"User Wave" or UW has sampling, the other doesn't...

you really, really want the UW (if you get an MD), it's just awesome (even though, on paper, didn't seem like something i needed).

I know, this is so true! It's kind of crazy they haven't gotten any big marketing stunt out of it, but maybe that's because they can't put it down in one or two words that say it all, like "Jurassic Park".

"User Wave" sounds right to the people that know the power, but to those that don't (yet) it must seem so nondescriptive that they don't have any clue of the beast it is meant to describe.

Yeah, it's a mistake to get anything other than the UW version, it's almost like a completely different beast.

MKI = 2MB memory
MKII = 2.5 MB memory

Different sizes too, the MKII is shorter by 11 mm.

how much sampling time are you gonna get on this thing? would you want to use it for single hit kits or is it best to leave it for resampling on the fly?

I split mine 50/50, 1MB for single drumhits, 1 MB left over for resampling on the fly in my DJ and live sets.

I am suffering a bit of GAS at the moment and was thinking of selling my MPC1000 and getting one of these... until I read your review Tarakith that mentions it's no good at semi-realistic hihats. I love swingy house hihats and that's a dealbreaker for me!
