problem with flam emulation for drums

Post by zsazsa » Fri Aug 15, 2008 11:49 pm

I want to repeat drum hits by holding a pad on my Trigger Finger.
I am trying to do this with the arpeggiator and impulse.

This does work when i hold the pads but when i tap the pads shortly so i would sound only one hit,
the signal often does not come through the arpeggiator (sometimes it does).
The midi (on the arp) in gives a signal but the midi out doesn't.

arp settings:
style: play order
free (about 45 ms)
retrigger: note

I am on live 6.

I hope somebody knows a solution so i can play single hits and flams.
I guess I could make a rack with 2 chains (one with and one without arp)
but i am a stubborn guy who just wants things to work the way i want them to.
:?

Pop a note length set to 'Note On' before the Arp. Set the 'Length' to 1sec or something like that. Actually fiddle around with the 'Length' value and see where it works right. One other thing i noticed is that this will work 'better' with the arp set to free. dont know why though.

Thanks Mike,

Putting note length in front of the arp is exactly the opposite from what i want :D
I just tried it, a great way to mash up your midi loops by the way.

The arp is already set to 'free'. The reason why it wouldn't work otherwise is that the arp would wait for output until the designated beat comes along.
So when set to 'free' it should automatically retrigger everytime i hit a pad.

Just to elaborate:
I want to be able to get a one shot drum hit when i momentarily tap the TF pad, and when i hold the pad the drumsample retriggers.

The retriggering works fine but when i do a short hit on my TF only about 50% of my hits come through.
Midi input on the left of the arp lights up, but not at the output side.
The notes do record correctly as i tapped them. Replaying the recorded hits results in the same absence of triggered sound.

I also checked with MidiOx (in case I happened to see only tiggered CC's and not notes).
I saw that there always is a note on event before any CC's are sent. I also tried a TF patch without CC's in Live but that didn't make any difference.

I'm clueless

Try using Filter delay.

I was only trying this for kick drum, so a kick on every down beat.

Filter Delay settings...

Input: "L+R"

Filter: 449 Hz; 7.21

Delay Time: Your preference. I took it off Sync and instead choose time of 71.2 ms.

Feedback: 0.0%
Pan: Center
Volume: 6.0 dB

I´m not a drummer, but I think a flam is shortly before the time of the snare, so it makes sense that a free arpeggio helps, cause the flam can`t be quantized.

I think your talking about rolls here?

A flam is a delayed double hit and it does not have a specific placement nor is it specific to any one drum.

I am a drummer of manny years... and you can quantize it.

i assign the computer keyboard to a MIDItrack with an arp monitor in,output goes to a second MIDI track where Impulse is.
i assign also the computer keyboard to the Impulse so i can play it normal mode.
i tried to delay the track where the arp is,but it doesn't change anything, track delay in Ableton is only audio, not MIDI.
Am i wrong?

-So you could play it straight, and when you want to roll, just click on another pad somewhere,a button,a computer key to switch the Arp on...
a foot controller could be apropriate
-assign a clip to a midi note which is delayed, with this method when clips are in repeat mode, you can assign the global quantize to a controller, then set values you want...
-do not touch nothing! it sounds good! try to addapt yourself: 45ms can be a single shot if you moove your finger up very quickly after the shot!
this is the idian tabla player method! :D
-i'd make a patch in UsineVST with some rolls,MIDI assigned to impulse;
with a fader to set the midi delay.
