HUGE PROBLEM! Great challange!

Post by guitarguruguy35 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 3:39 pm

If you are windows Xp savy here is one hell of a problem

Friend installed ableton 7 and set the plug in folder to scan
PROGRAM FILES FOLDER!
So now it scans ALL .dll files for whole system and of course crashes.
Uninstall doesn't work cause ableton is still scanning Program files folder upon reinstall!

I am not XP savy so I dont know what ableton has imbedded so it continues to scan the same folder.
Obviously it is not fully uninstalling or else it would not know what folder to scan.

I have no idea what to do to help.
I figured this would be the place to find the answer.
Up for a challange?

probably need to delete the preferences file - I think it's in the library folder - sorry, I'm at work now so can't check

maybe try moving the Program Files folder temporarily while you startup ableton, then change the Scan options.

Otherwise, you'll need to delete the preference file. Just search here for that.

I think that could cause all sorts of problems as the Ableton .exe is IN the program files folder. I could be wrong and you're welcome to try, but I would certainly avoid that option - I don't think windows would let you anyway as the folder holds many other .dll files which are likely to used by running processes as soon as you start the machine.

lazy today, so only a quote from the faq:

Delete the Preferences.cfg file for the version you are trying to open, and re-open Live. You will find this file in the following paths:

* Windows (Live 3): (Installation Directory)\Ableton\Preferences
* Windows (Live 4 and laster versions) C:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Ableton\Live\Preferences
* Mac OS 9: /System/Preferences/Ableton
* Mac OS X: /User/Library/Preferences/Ableton

Note that on some Windows systems the application data folder is hidden by default. Here is how to make it visible:

Windows XP/2000

1. Launch Explorer.
2. Select Tools/Folder Options/View.
3. Check "Show hidden files and folders."
