what you're looking for is gear with the simplest interface yet the most flexible configuration.
It has to be the monome.
I'd bet archeologists will dig those things up and use them as evidence of the state of music production in our times centuries from now.
(disclaimer: quite hideously drunk, I invite criticism for any glaring stupidity this post may have provided....... hic)

Hmmmm, I would have to say the following for various reasons.
1.RS7000 - even if you NEVER use the sampler and Internal TG it still does polyrythmic sequencing on a level I haven't found in software or other hardware based units.
2.Korg WaveStation AD - the Wavestation to have if you're going to grab one.
3.Clavia Nord Modular G1 and G2 - digital, modular, fx processor and more.
4.Electron Monomachine and MachineDrum - enough said there really as they are superbly defined and rather beautiful instruments.
5.Novation Supernova II - all ready rare as hens teeth secondhand and a much underated and beautiful sounding VA.
6.Ensoniq TS10 and VFXSD - way underated digital machines and then some.
7.Emu Morpheus and Ultraproteus - if I could have two of the Emu Proteus Collection these are the two I'd grab. Honestly do not think anybody has really explore the function generators and synthesis engines too their full potential on these at all.
8.Waldorf Xtk and Q+ - enough said really, these really represent how beautiful digital synthesis can be and to call them VA is pretty much an insult IMHO ...but I digress to much.
9.Kawai K5000S - did additive ever get any better than this in commercially viable and affordable hardware.
10.Genoq Octopus - superb step based sequencer with great updates, stylings and interface that begs to actually be played like an instrument and not just a sequencer. Will do things the RS7000 can't also for example but the whole ergonomy and fact that it goes beyond step sequencer and into the realm of interactive instrument pretty much says it all for me.
Somewhere between a rock and a hard place is actually nowhere.

The new Minimoog with patch memory.
All the Moog pedals.
The Metasonix Wretch Machine - tube synth, not for the weak of ear, or b0unce.
The Metasonix boxes.
Jomoz Sunsyn- I think this is already a classic though?

but yes yes yes in 5 years those things are going to be hard to come by. i think the sampling sucks donkey balls but the sequencer+ if you're a minimal samplist rocks so hard
you'll love this infiniteB, no less than right before this post I just scored an sp-808 for $100. in crispy clean condition, now that is another fuckin classic right there. and I know how to upgrade the software to an Ex-panded model
I had an SP-808--- loved that machine... the real time pitch shift was awesome
i had the orig sp808, then an 808ex, then an orig. 808 with ex software and then an edirol A6 for those who don't know which was an sp-808 that had a 2-16gig hard drive inside it, no d.beam but some extra fx and 32 virtual tracks, it was kind of like an sp-808 with a vs recorder inside

DSI Evolver
I was waiting for someone to mention those, what do you think will make them classics with in the next 5 or so years?
i know everything that has daves name on it kind of becomes instant class
but i keep seeing alot of unknown or very much so called lesser quality similiar instruments that give the evolver a run for it's money, least thats what i see on you tube and everybody knows the mcnuggetnet doesn't lie. but i don't know that much about synthesis. i love what that dude denkitribe gets out of his.
You KEEP seeing instruments that give the evolver a run for it's money ?
list them.
the evolver is the obvious answer to this thread. fuck the waffle.
If most of you weren't such heinous philistines I might be more inclined to list a few gems.
I'd like a wretch machine for <$999, but it will never be a classic (you know it's true MW)
spreader of butter

@tone
sorry to be an annoying skid stain on your kecks of rationality but the guitar is a classical instrrument and cannot be included in this list because...brrrrrrrrrrr(drum roll)rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. its an ancient istrument.
I'd love to see those medeival minstrels prancing from village to township with their korg ms20's informing the yokels aboot their pressing needs to bring out their dead and apply carrots to their women folk's noses to ensure they're not mistaken for witches through the medium of un-processed sawtooth analogue waveforms.
Might as well argue the same point point for the humble piano.
oh... wait a minute, thats a clasic too.

But that is no ordinary guitar.
That is a $6000. hunk of Moog.
Yum-Yum-Yum...

Hey Roody come look at this..
Lets play a bit of Rawk an Roll...
Still though, I'm looking at my dusty guitars in the corner and thinking, hmmm, still not as revolutionary as the computer that i'm typing this shit on?!!!?!
lets have some perspective here...
will the guitar let you multitrack....... nope
will the guitar let you be the whole band (fuck off drums included)... nope
will the guitar let you fondle it sexually.... Absolutely...
Is it a modern classic..... the OP was talking about music making 'gear' so...
....
...
nope.
its a class instrument. the best their is. but come on pa, it in't modern.
