sample, copyright question...

well this is not about live question, but putting here anyways.. if anyone knows.

what is the maximum seconds we can sample from an existing song? is there a specific rule or does it vary??

Depends what you're going to do with it TBH.

If you plan to make any money out of it, the answer is pretty much zero, unless you get permission/licensing and you will more than likely end up having to pay the copyright owner something. Failure to do this will land you in court if you make a shed load of money off someone else's music.

If you're planning to bust out a couple of "remixes" at a party, local bar or whatever, then it really doesn't matter IMO.

There is some "in-between ground" as well...

Funny the maximum seconds rumour is still spread.

There is no maximum seconds rule, if your sample is noticeable stolen you might get accused.

As already said: If the original author doesn't know about it (e.g. you play your music at small private parties), you're safe.
