BUG Double Program Change w/ OLD MIDI hardware synths HELP!!

Post by tarzandan » Tue Nov 02, 2004 1:40 am

I just noticed that this is definitely a bug. It is IMPOSSIBLE to do a Program Change on an OLD MIDI hardware synth, for example my Yamaha TG55.... also on other synths made before General MIDI standard i.e. the Yamaha TG33, TG77, TG99, SY22, SY55, SY77, SY99 and Ensoniq SD-1 , VFX, and lots of other earlier pre-General MIDI synths.

THe reason seems to be that these older (made in 1990) synths REQUIRE TWO PROGRAM CHANGES IN A ROW.. the synth interprets the first one as a bank change selector, and the second one as the program change number in that bank.

Here is how it works for the TG55: the first Program Change MIDI message must be between 120..123 (not entirely sure??) and this works as a BANK SELECT ( the ROM Bank programs, the Internal RAM bank programs, or the Memory Card bank programs ) ..

Then you must immediately send it a second Program Change MIDI message, 0..63, and this is the ACTUAL program number for the bank...

THIS IS THE OLD STYLE PROGRAM CHANGE TECHNIQUE used very widespread before 1992 (?) when General MIDI and its BANK CHANGE MESSAGE became STANDARD from then onward..

Can anyone HELP with advice on HOW TO ACCOMPLISH A BANK CHANGE on these 1990-ish synths ?!?!?!?!??!!?!??!

TWO PROGRAM CHANGE MESSAGES IN A ROW ARE REQUIRED...

HELP !!!

Unfortuanatly this would require something like a "compatibility mode" swith in the clip properties panel. Or do you have an idea how this could be solved keeping the compatibility with the new GM standard ?

Hello Eduard,

Your idea for a "Compatibility" checkbox on the MIDI Clip, which signals Live to send the pre-GM style of bank and program change, would be a fine solution.

Do you think you would get this bugfix into version 4.0.5 ?

Sorry, this wont be part of a bugfix update, but we will see what we can do for this in one of the next big updates.
