BEST DJ SET UP

Post by caihooligan » Wed Nov 05, 2008 2:30 pm

Hello I'm very new to Live as well as to the dj scene.

My default set up consists of 3 audio scene and six devices: EQ Three, Flanger, Auto Filter, Simple Delay, Reverb, Phaser.

Now I just wonder how can I use those devices in particular what do they do...?!

Can anybody sort me out?

I suggest typing EQ, Flanger, Filter etc into google if you dont know what they do.

Try the ableotn manual as well - if you have read that, read google (all of it + the entire internet!) and still dont understand them - by all means ask again :)
Nothing to see here - move along!

You really need to read the manual. Khazul has offered you about the best advice you are going to get on this question.

But I am curious, if you don't know what they are or what they do than why do you have them as part of your default set up?

It can be weird trying to figure out how to DJ with Live. I suggest reading this tutorial in full, and keep Live open and be sure try out everything that is discussed as you read:

http://www.ableton.com/pages/tips/2004_04

The part in there about EQ3 and the kill buttons will make your day, but read the whole thing. It's about Version 3, but almost everything in there is very useful for how you DJ with the latest versions of Live.

Or you can lie to us all and say that you've read the manual and all of the internet and still don't understand. Then you'd probably get a faster answer!

lol

Very good tips guys.

I'm gathering together lots of material.

Once I would have gone through all of it I will know who should I refer to.

Cheers buddies

IMHO, there is no best way to DJ with Live. There is only "your way". Spend hours beating your head on the desk trying to do the simplest of things. Read the advice of others only sparingly, and only specific responses to specific questions. Ask others what their advice is and you find the best way THEY use it - not yours.

Perhaps it's a matter of process, but I avoided this forum like the plague until I figured out how to use Live for DJ sets in a way that felt natural and good. Only then did I feel comfortable adapting the advice of others here to my own method and style.

Then I started posting about vaginas, 80's music, and pudding.

The biggest hurdle to DJing with Live is the intrinsic desire to preserve the sanctity of your song. It's not a song, it's just another audio clip! Chop that fucker up, rearrange it, have some fun with it.

edit: ableton lie haha oops

It also helps to end each rehearsal session by playing with your fully-aroused sex parts, which will gradually teach your subconscious to associate a well-executed set with an orgasm. This heightened state of arousal will be apparent to potential partners, ensuring that every time you play out you get laid. This has never failed me, not even once. Lamentably it has landed me in hot water with my wife, who for some reason gets upset when I have sex with others.

Ok, I'm done!
I finished reading the manual and I followed some tutorial.
Now I'd like to know how to load my ableton live with useful fx. Furthermore I'd like to know how to configure my UC33 controller.

Cheers!
