live not purging memory

Post by alltomorrowsparties » Sat Nov 08, 2008 4:50 pm

Hi all....
I'm using ableton 6 on mac osx 10.4.11...
today, as i had system monitor open, i noticed the most peculiar thing; I had a live set open that was taking up roughly 200mb of real memory, i then closed it and started a new one.

Usually when my "new" template is opened, it takes up about 78mb of memory, but when i went from the 200mb set to the 78mb set, system monitor was still showing ableton using 200mb of ram??

I then closed ableton completely, re-opened with my default 78mb set; system monitor was back down to the proper 78mb;s of used ram.

I'm a little worried now because I'm starting gigging in January and I'm not going to have time to quit ableton..reload....open the next set...etc

...does it happen to you?

...is this behaviour normal?

thanks in advance

Jamie

Are you noticing any performance issues? If your not then don't worry about it. It could be that Live wants that RAM reserved once its used.

And for the record, I have noticed the same thing in Leopard.
Gig Rig - rMBP 2.3GHZ i7, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, OSX 10.13.x, Presonus FS, Live 10.x
Home Rig - i9 eight-core Hackintosh 32GB DDR4, 2nd Generation Scarlett 18i20, ADA8000, JoeMeek SixQ, Live 10.x

Mac OS X memory management is somewhat 'cache aggressive', just in case you need that code or data again. Look at the explanation in the Active Monitor section.
Live is also cache aggressive so the two together.... but until you don't experience Jitter... you're ok man!

It actually does this in Windows too.

You have to close out the program in order to REALLY free up anything that isn't loaded by third party VSTi.
