listen through the intro (until 0:30). does anyone know what synth has that bass patch? it's on many old 80's jams (Take on Me is one prominent example).

Sounds very FMish to me possibly a DX7?

I've done exactly that, but it doesn't seem to get close enough. To me it seems like a preset from a hardware sample-based or wavetable synth.I'd start with NI FM8 preset "Bassguitar I" from the FM7 factory bank.
But speaking of the FM8, does anyone know if a DX7 equivalent sound bank is available anywhere? It's definitely possible that I'm just not programming the FM8 correctly.
by the way to benmiron: you posted a link to the same track homie

Google the interwebs, there are plenty of places hosting DX7 to FM7/8 conversions.Smellhound wrote: But speaking of the FM8, does anyone know if a DX7 equivalent sound bank is available anywhere? It's definitely possible that I'm just not programming the FM8 correctly.
I'd go along with the FM bass tip, add a very fast pitch modulation to get the attack sound, i'd also add a reverb with the decay and diffusion cut very short and a couple of bands of filtering.
I also think the sound has been sampled and is sequenced from the sampler rather that the synth that made it.
