MAC USERS: Customizable protection for your laptops

Post by john doe by choice » Tue Nov 11, 2008 10:42 pm

I've been looking around for a while for laptop protection, and have seen some interesting stuff like the Incase sleeves/hardcases, but they seem to be bulky and add more weight.

Anyway, I've come up with something that meets all of my needs, but I'm now wondering if it's something other people would be interested in, since the cost is much lower than any of the incase stuff, and it obviously doesn't add the weight or size of the incase stuff either. It is, in essence, a scratch-proof, heavy duty sticker to go on the top of the laptop - it's removeable, doesn't mar, can be used 2-3 times, and protects your laptop and resale value. On top of that, it can be customized with any image or logo you wish (you supply the art/logo), and is made to fit the front of your MacBook or Macbook Pro. It won't cover the curves, but it isn't designed to cover the whole laptop, just the part that is the most exposed most of the time, which is the top. It also covers the glowing apple on the top, which makes your lappy a more prominent target for theft.

My question to you is would you be interested, and would $35 be reasonable for something such as this?

Any input would be appreciated - thanks.

kind of, but not totally - it's not static cling or anything, but a sticker that comes off clean while sticking until you remove it. Because it doesn't go over the curves, it won't peel up on it's own, either. It's pretty heavy-duty but not heavy, and there really is no scratching this stuff.

I just finished the prototype today - once I get home, I'll post pics, but it will be a couple of hours.

Sounds interesting, but I reckon the success will depend on the usage. It sounds like it would protect the top and bottom surfaces from scratches, but in normal usage - chucking the laptop in a soft bag/rucksack - I'd be looking for something to protect the edges from impact damage as well.

ok yeah i see. so its just a sticker that goes on the top and bottom. thats a cool idea. have u ever seen this... http://store.apple.com/us/product/TR937 ... MjQyMDU3Ng

i have the incase sleeve thing. its good cause u can put the laptop in there and throw the laptop in ur backpack and its protected by the case. its got 3/8 inch or so padding. this shit is pretty much a rip off though.

so does this sticky thing have padding on it? that would be a good idea to have padding on it. idk about the bottom though because it would block the airflow. or u could make the padding removable on the bottom.

That link is for something that is pretty much the same as the incase hardshell, which is something I thought was overpriced as well, and I don't want to increase the size - these stickers would be a fraction of the thickness of the hardcase and just as bulletproof.

Yeah, this isn't for the bottom, although I could try making a sticker for the bottom with holes/ventilation in it like the incase hardshell, which, btw, doesn't really protect random backpack debris from getting in the ports - only the sleeve does that.

That speck site has something that is another incase hardshell type product, and the site listed above that is similar to what I'm talking about, but what I've made isn't as flimsy, although without getting my hands on one, I'm not sure how durable it would be (that product looks as though it is so thin it could be rolled up in a tube, and what I have is so stiff that it would have to be shipped in an envelope; it also looks as though it will only fit a flat surface, same as mine, but it's just easier to make for the limited product range of Macs instead of for the entirety of pc laptops).

I also didn't check the price on any of those links - my net at the moment is slow, but I'll check when I get home.

really though, what I'm talking about is made from similar material as what you would see on a floor advertisement at a grocery store, meaning it would take a more of a beating than any kind of "skin" type product out there.

For the most part I like Apple design, and I usually find these kinds of things ugly, lame, and wasteful. I mean, who cares about a couple of scratches? Is it really that precious? All of those $30 cases and $15 graphic skins for the face are headed for a landfill somewhere.

It seems as though the "skins" are just for flash and minor protection, while what I've made is really tough, but the scratches actually do mean something when you're thinking about reselling your laptop, same as any hardware - they signify a level of treatment by the owner, and can bring down your resale drastically.

As for landfills, everything ends up in a landfill at some point.

At any rate, I don't mind having something custom made just for myself, but it can't hurt to see what other people think about it as a viable product.

What do you mean? What I made has my own graphic, meaning that you could put any graphic there, picture or whatever.

Think Guly meant the picture of what you made.
