Catching samples from online video

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Thu Nov 13, 2008 11:13 pm

Quite often i like to incorporate samples from old movies/obscure productions that are most readily available on youtube. I've conceived of a number of ways to go about getting the sound into a sample-able format and was wondering what technique others use.

Usually I download the video using a utility like firefox's 'download helper', then I convert the downloaded video file into mp3 using a media converter, usually media-convert.com.

I'm keen to hear other people's methods and suggestions of better programs and apps to use in the process.

I'm on a mac and i use audio hi jack pro for everything related to what your talking about.

it records to various formats including aac.

You may find something similar for whatever platform your using.
MacBook Pro 2.4 Ghz 2Gb
OS X.5.7 | MOTU Ultralite | Live 8 | Ableton Drum Machine's | Addictive Drums | Conectiv+ Torq | Ms. Pinky | AudioDamage

+2 for that shnizzit. you can easily record and organize any audio your puter will play. i like how you can set up different recording sources with varying formats ahead of time, or just quickly set it up on the fly. plus its cheap!

i usually send files straight to Amadeus Pro for quick, easy edits, then into Live for total tweakage...
MacbookPro 2.33/ Live7/ APC-40/ BCR2000/ padKontrol/ Oxygen61/ Edirol FA-66/ KRK Rokit 5s with sub/ infinite possibility...

Sounds like you're situated, but for the record you could also use soundflower:

It's free and handy.

Set your internal sound to soundflower 1,2

Set your ableton inputs to soundflower

activate inputs 1,2

Record anything on the internet.

The media convert method works just fine but it requires an extra step, downloading the video from youtube. With hijacker it seems to be a much simpler process as I can source the audio track directly from the website without the need to deal with the video.

However I am going to wait a while before I register with hijacker which means I'll be using the media convert method for any clips over 10 minutes :D
