FL / Live rewire latency problems

Post by paul » Mon Nov 15, 2004 2:12 pm

Latency's good when playing audio direct into Live.
But when I'm rewired to FL it stinks, like 1/4 second or something.
As does midi signal from VSTs in FL.

Playing into M-Audio O-zone sound card.
Midi-Ox doing the routing, though all I do is set Midi input to FL as Yoke 1.

Is there somewhere obvious I should start tweaking.. what, and how and stuff??

Or is it likely that this is just my system struggling? P4 2.66Ghz.

Anyone like Ryan who might push me in the right direction?

I use Live with FLStudio and I don't hve latency issues like you are describing. It works pretty well, but I do have one small issue with MIDI latency. Sending MIDI from Live to an instrument in FLStudio incurs a small latency of 10 msec. If I use FL's sequencer to play all the instruments in FL I don't have any problems.

my sluggish rewire

Windows XP
P4 2.66 GHz
512 MB DDR
60GB 7200rpm 8MB Cache

It's a lovely little thing, from NU Systems (UK), very nice people.
Processor struggles a bit if I get too heavy with Reaktor, but otherwise gobbles up my doodling.

I've tried turning off all the processor heavy stuff and graphics and flashing lights, but they shouldn't make THAT much difference?

To be honest, I'm a bit hopeless with latencies ... don't really know what I'm doing.

Seems I can set O-zone to one of 5 simple settings (very low - high).
I can set buffer in FL.
Live seems to be pre-set ...

Hands up, I need to try reading the manual again, but it never seems to make much sense to me, specially as I'm rewiring, and that's not really covered...

I really don't know for sure, I've certainly had latency issues in the past (and present - I still have an unusable amount of midi latency as soon as I put Live into record on my P4 1.7 lappy), but not precisely what you're describing. Tweaking (XP's services, etc) is only worthwhile for the extra icing on the cake, performance-wise, but it's not gonna make that much of a difference if something else is going on. The only immediately obvious question is - are you using the soundcard's ASIO drivers? These should give far better performance than ASIO-DirectX or ASIO-MME or DirectSound or any other drivers that might be listed in your device options.

Cheers Mr Burnt.
Appreciate it.
Pretty sure I'm set to ASIO, but I'll do a thorough check.
Maybe time to re-install the Ozone.

Ta.
