After I lay out a song. I seem to spend hours and hours editing.

Does this happen to you?

Self- Producing is rough!

Nope, I just record everything in one perfect take and send it off to the label!

Interesting, sometimes I have to listen through my songs twice and do a tweak or two, but like Tim, things are usually perfect the first time through. You must be doing it wrong.

I normally do a 'clean' run, then spend a little time on the usual. Track volumes, sidechain compression, reverb, but thats it. Mind you, I'd hardly call myself a producer...

The problem is that it never sounds "right".

Yeah, if I'm working on using the production for part of the vibe. This is a trick question though, some people here are minimalist techno or indie, where most tracks just fall into sonic place more or less.

I spend a lot of time listening on different devices than starting all over again on the mix, on rare occasions I listen and smile and stop, but it's rare. But yeah, I spend a lot of time at all levels of overdoing it as well....but producing yourself IS a lot of work, I don't think there are a lot of musicians realize how many angles you can look at music until they've tried the do it all yourself approach.

How many others out there are complete lonewolfs? It sucks when you are stuck with yourself and your huge ego all day in the studio, tempers can get out of hand real fast. :P (that's the bonus side of producing it yourself, only you can bruise your ego)

Nothing wrong with a little perfectionism. A lot of the best out there aren't just hit with a stroke of genius that comes out perfectly straight away. I'm a huge fan of Peter Gabriel, and he takes years between albums 'cause he's so meticulous.

Whatever works best for you. I take a ton of time editing, but that's because my equipment sucks so badly that it can't even keep my playing in time. College budgets. Ugh.

Absolutely!

It always seems like I spend 25% of the time to achieve the last 5% of the result. I can really recommend having a collaborator to bounce off. Sure, it means you won't get it your way every time, but it keeps you from trotting out all your old personal chiches as well.

I find I don't mind spending time editing if the track turns out well. I hate it when you spend ages editing and micro-editing only to be struck by the revelation "wait a minute...this track sucks!". Consequently I now try and be very sure I like the track before I go near any automation etc.

+1

Also what Pitch Black wrote. It's really helpful having another person (whom you trust) to share their opinion. That alone can save you a ton of time and heartache.

I've been accused of being a perfectionist in the past and i'm doing my best to chill out a little at a time. If you pick the music apart eventually you'll have killed any soul or human touch that was there to begin with.

If you can,.. listen to your fav bands rough cuts or studio session before there done. My favs have surprisingly crazy edits and unique things that i never heard before. STILL love those songs!

SO take a deep breathe is what i'm saying

As time passes you will get faster at polishing off tracks. My first tracks that I produced on live are on my myspace. They're not perfect but they're not that bad. I find in my newer tracks I recognize what needs to edited sooner than I used to. I've been on hardware for 13 years and switched to live again 6 months ago. My first few tries with live were unsuccessful as I was new to understanding computers and such. I still miss the hardware but am accumilating the funds to get some hardware back. sorry I know this is a bit off topic. But this is the only place I know that some one can relate to me.
