home dance music listening makes me feel old and boring

Post by beats me » Thu Nov 20, 2008 3:17 am

Sometimes when I'm not rehearsing with my conservative christian rock band Van Palin I put on some dance tunes from a recent drunken beatport buying incident or some classics and at that moment I'm really tapping my foot and bobbing my head or even dancing around the room, but after about a half hour of that private embarrassment I want to go out and experience life at a bar or club.

When I kill the music I then think of where I should go and with who. More times than not I pull a blank on both those questions. I know most of my friends are probably already settled in for another night of the mundane. I've reached that age where everything with friends has to be well planned out in advance and even then there will be a high flake factor. And soon after that realization the old guy in me kicks in and whispers "Work tomorrow dude. You'll never survive". Then I get depressed and turn on the History Channel like I should have in the first place. Nobody wants to party after a Hitler documentary or a detailed history of the paperclip.

For the same reason I don't like listening to dance music at work. It makes me question how my life got to where it is and I really don't want to be there.

Does anybody else get these feelings of life misdirection after soaking in some serious tunage?

No, because I listen to a healthy dose of Gangsta Rap...you see, I'm black. therefore I listen to gangsta rap. Really no ifs, ands, or buts about it

black people listen to gangsta rap and circuit music

so, those feelings of insecurity, despair, and self-loathing I wouldn't know anything about

it's better that way

That's what white people have Lynyrd Skynyrd for. Music for all occasions that isn't particularly inspiring other than to get in a truck and drive somewhere aimlessly or shoot inanimate objects.

In my mid to late 20's I could go clubbing til 2 AM and still make it to work at 6 AM and make it through the day. Now it's just exhausting thinking about the logistics of getting anybody else off their couch.

LOL, welcome to getting older. I have definitely had nights like that, or worse, actually managing to drag myself out and realizing around 12 it was likely a mistake. Music's boring, wallet's empty, and work is going to suck the next day.

That said, there's still at least one or two nights a year when it all comes together unexpectedly and you have a great night. Before you know it they're calling last call and you're like "already?". I long ago gave up on relying on friends going with me when i feel like going out, if anything there's less stress involved when you just do it solo and meet some new people.

I haven't been out enough lately to make a "this place is dead" assessment but I've heard even Vegas has become a ghost town, well no surprise on that one I guess but it's still a good gauge.

I have a friend that every weekend goes into the studio, cranks up the speakers, and does a DJ mix for his podcast. After that he goes home, nukes a burrito, and falls asleep to a rerun of the Colbert Report. I don't get it. How can somebody get all amped up on mixing music and then just pass out like mission accomplished.

There's the problem. TV is bad. Get rid of that cable mang.

People get old. It happens. I'm old. Dance music makes me feel alive. I listen to it when I need a pick me up. I love listening to it at work. I love listening to it as I walk through the city.

Somewhere deep inside of me I foolishly believe that if I create enough bombastic + fun dance music that I will never get old. Like, old-old. There's a fountain of youth in them beats. I'm Ponce de Leon and Ableton is the Nina, Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Or something.
