Subwoofer or no subwoofer

Post by aburgener » Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:57 pm

Just a quick question - how many fellow forum users use a subwoofer with their monitors?

it is probably massive overkill, but I have an 18" JBL sub paired up with my Alesis M1 MK2 monitors. I originally only did mixing in my studio which is why i got it, but I couldn't imagine not having it (especially if your monitors can't put out much bass)

Yes, a guilty pleasure paired with Adam A7s, not sure how absolutely uber-necessary it is but what the heck, it makes me smile.

well, i've got one... it's just always turned down so low...

and now that i've moved my stuff upstairs in the spare bedroom, i have less space for it and i feel like i'd need to get something to stick under it, some sort of padding, to keep it from rattling everything in the room (my floors are hardwood)

my monitors don't put out much bass but i do love the way they sound without the sub, especially when i'm playing keys and stuff... very nice and rich.

so i have to decide on whether or not to sell it

How many times a day do you read on this forum "Oh man, I'm so glad I got rid of that piece of gear that I love!"

Subwoofer rocks! Got a 2.1 system from blue sky, like sweetjesus, and we love them, right? ;)

I also love the blue sky, those and mackies. Switch back forth, nothing is as fun as crankin the sub when you are working on a project

Those of you who have subs, do you use the sub when doing your final mixing?

I use it all the time of course, but I have to be careful when I crank it up with the neighbours. But even at low levels its good to have. I use it at every stage of the writing process.

don't have one right now, but it's on my list.

if you're writing for the club, it's the only way to know you're not messing up in the low frequencies.
