I slipped into a daze, whilst I was there I heard the most startling music, it was at once familiar and alien, reassuring and unsettling.

I absolutely love it. I use Live alone, no VSTs or anything from "outside" and Operator gives me so much inspiration and not so rarely surprises (good ones, mostly).
The problem with presets that come with Live is that they might give you the impression that Operator mostly makes some "retro" noise, also some of the presets are rather dry and dull. Personally, I wasn't even satisfied with CovOps presets, either.
I'd recommend to anyone seriously interested in diving into the sound design with Operator by themselves, from scratch, zero, all oscillators and effects off. Get to know the very basics of FM synthesis, beforehand, but no need to go deep into the math behind it, just the general idea.

I you want to see what kind of more abstract sounds Operator is capable of you could do worse than download Christian Kleine's excellent patches from here.

Turned my head around to Operator completely.

When I first bought it I didn't like it because I didn't really know anything about synthesis. Then I warmed up to it. Now I've almost come around to not liking it again because its too limited.
You can get around the limited operator amounts by using racks. But then it eats alot of cpu.
Even just with one operator (synth) I've made polyphonic patches that have shut my computer right down (and its a recent macbook with lots of ram).
The lfo should be able to cycle on its own, not restart each time. Even more importantly, it needs more destinations. It should be able to modulate the gain of each operator for instance, not just the frequency. Thats a huge range of sounds that you are forced to do with clip envelopes, which completely rules out sine wave based modulation, since you can't draw a perfect curve.
Its a nice sounding synth, but too limited for me. But I think others are turned off initially by its sonic qualities, which I don't agree with. It sounds quite, quite good, and I really like the different versions of the saw/square waves. But it stops short of greatness. Its like a sketch of a classic synth, not the fleshed out version.

Operator is great but it does have some limitations.
but then you would be better of with FM8 perhaps?

Operator for me is a quite versatile, BASIC approach to FM synthesis.
If i think of FM7/8, yep, these are full fledged FM synths and i love them
and their huge potential in terms of routing, patching, envelopes etc.
But, i also love operator and use it in nearly all my projects. My "Operatorium"
is constantly growing and i would'nt like to miss it. Everytime i come to point like
"mmh, i want another LFO for double modulate the filter " or "man it soo sucks
that i'm not able to re-route osc to theirselfes freely" i think about it's basic approach,
think about ways to accomplish my ideas and beeing impressed what potential
is under it's hood. Operator is great and the possibility to test and evaluate it
should avoid unhappy customers....
I'm waiting intense for an updated version of Operator in Live 8......
