I dont do min/tech house, but I do layer kicks and compress them a lot. I also think it is important to tune the kick drums aswell. My fav compressor technique for kicks is using the excellent and free camel crusher plugin bu adding some subtle (or not so subtle in some cases) distortion and compression.

The best tip I learned about kicks was to find a kick you like and use it.
I spent ages trying to get a kick to sound different, maybe punchier, deeper or blah blah then I took advice which was to find a kick that already sounds like the one I am looking for.
There are millions out there.
Try Puremagnetik's free kickbank - it has loads in.
Or for techno you simply can't beat the classic 808, 909 kicks used as they are.
A bit of compression also won't go a miss and have a go at changing the sample starting point of the kick you're using. It's unbelievable how much the kick's character can change by doing this.

I just use whatever kick might be hanging around.
Logic Studio, Live 7, Max 5, Monome 64, and Desktop Evolver

why is everybody hunting for the "perfect" kick? listen to a good tune on your laptop speakers - it will rock anyway. i think it's not the kick / compression / whatever that makes your track a good one.
i think it's about how the samples fit together in a rythmic way. (of course you have to tweak the decays, when it comes to rythm)

Different Kicks work with different songs, there is no artists who just uses one kick....

My synths go up to 11.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

I usually set my 2 compressors to just over -7.5 and then turn the conflex dial to around 1.25 - that's when it starts pumping.

I use this
Bit of automation really livens up a kick I find. I usually play with the pitch and harmonics till I find something interesting. It does depend on the track though.
