Multiple Takes - Best way to do it?

I find myself frequently wanting to do multiple takes of a recording into arrangement view, but it's kind of a pain. The way I do it is to do a "save as" under a different file name-"Mytrack2" - then tab over to arrangement, select all and hit delete. Then back to session and make sure I delete all the automation one by one. Is there a better/faster/easier way to do this?

You can later "unroll" a loop recording, either by repeatedly using the Edit menu’s Undo
command or graphically in the Clip View: After loop recording, double-click on the new clip.
In the Clip View’s Sample Display, you can see a long sample containing all audio recorded
during the loop-recording process. The Clip View’s loop brace defines the audio taken in
the last pass; moving the markers left lets you audition the audio from previous passes.

I'm not sure what the "arrangement loop" is. Anyway, this sounds tedious as well. I guess what I'm wishing for is some kind of easy "system" that will automatically clear out the arrangement and delete all automation when I want to try another take.

the arrangement loop is just any part of your arrangement, played as a loop

it is activated by clicking on the loop switch in the control bar (between the punch in and punch out buttons) - you define its length by adjusting the length of loop brace (just under the time line or bars ruler)

so, when you record on a new track, you can record several 'takes' while the loop is playing and unroll them in the clip view, where you can select the different takes by moving the loop brace which represents the lenght of one take

what he said. This seems like it should solve your problem.


Use the loop markers in arrangement and enable the looping on the top of the arrangement view. That way you cna do multiple takes in a row and have all of them recorded.

This works with audio. Is it the same for automation? I've never tried. Seems to be what OP is asking.

seems to me that he was deleting automation not saving it... maybe I am wrong.

Sorry for the necropost, but I need to know how to record multiple takes and then 'unroll them' as mentioned here. I don't see it in the manual for Ableton Live Suite 10; maybe it's not even covered in the manual?

Anyway, if one of my fellow Live users could lead me to a tutorial or details about how to choose among different takes after recording, I'd be grateful.

I found out how to record multiple takes, but it's the 'unroll' part that I can't figure out. Every method I thought up, on my own, to replace the last take with another take always leads to a lot of tedious nudging back and forth because it's out of sync.

Best suggestion would be to upgrade to Live 11 that now has this functionality which is very easy to use.

In Live 10 it still works exactly like the 2nd post quotes, you either use undo or manually move the Loop Braces inside the Clip View.

Live 10's manual refers to it as "passes", not "takes", I guess they changed it to avoid confusion.

Thank you, pottering. Somehow I failed to notice that this thread started earlier than the post I thought was the first.

I'm glad to know what it's called in the manual. Bummed to realize that after I close my live set, I can't use Undo after reopening to move among the takes and select a different one.

I suppose I should pay attention to the quantization settings and make sure I have a take that starts and ends on beats or bar lines... because I will sometimes need to drag the loop brace (or move loop brace with computer keyboard, which might be quicker and easier).
