audio latency
audio latency
With other programs, i am used to simply recording my guitar on one track while listen to a drum loop on another ( it makes a cooler click track)
anyway, I can't seem to beat this latency problem in Live (again i don't experience this with other audio programs such as Cubase, Nuendo, etc)
My guitar signal is from line 6 POD which is monitored from a Mackie, where all my audio sources simply feed to my audio card. basic studio set up, no big tricks
The lowest latency i can set in Live without clipping audio is 33ms
when i play with a loop it sounds fine - i go back to listen and the guitar is off rythm. Do I have to go back on every track and offset the track to compensate for the latency
Maybe I'm trying to use Live as a Multi-track audio recorder like Pro-Tools when really it's power is more to assemble, sequence and work with existing loops.
suggestions?

That was a stupid answer. He said he doesn't have the problem with other software.Lo-Fi Massahkah wrote:Get a better audio interface?
Did you go to Live's audio preferences and adjust the buffer? Maybe Live is defaulting to something different than your other software. You should be able to use Live as a multi-track recorder just like anything else.

I tried to set the latency in live 4 following the suggested routine by the Abes. Couldn't get it right with the Novation remote 25. There was no way I could play guitar through Guitar rig without a distrubing latency. Tried the same routine with motu 828 and tascam 122 and it seemed to work quite right. Black Magig

trust me.
Buy the RME multiface.
I'm alround 0ms with live4.
I was pissed with Motu.
I'm so satisfied with the RME.
Such low latency, you won't regret it.

There are many threads here where you won't find nothing infamous with
the multiface.
With the Motu, man that thing can kill you.
Check it out.
Good luck.

Yes I have adjusted the buffers to their minimum, got down to 33ms total (12ms input/21ms output)
my interface drivers are using MME/Direct X. I don't have driver capabilitiy for ASIO, which is probably what Digi001, RME and these other interfaces use.
My real confusion was that I have not experienced this problem with other audio software like cubase, nuendo, Sonar, SAW, etc
I was just trying to determine if Live has a different kind of architecture that requires a high end interface to function properly for this kind of application. There's nothing worse than buying more equipment and later someone says "oh you should have clicked this box and saved yourself $300" . Doh!

try...
you ought to be able to find asio4all I believe it is called, install that and use it as an asio driver for your existing card. It may help you break the 10ms barirer.

Does the ASIO4all driver get loaded into the Live Application or into my main Windows directory for my audio card operation?
only reason I ask is because I use other audio applications for my job, can't afford downtime if there are driver conflicts with existing direct x drivers used by other programs. (Windows can be touchy about that stuff)
thanks for the recommendation - sounds like that's the problem and i'll check out

I can fix your problem..I'v posted this respose befor to people with latency problems...you get the same pproblems if you are feeding the signal from ableton out through external effects and want to record the effects...okay check it out
(if you dont have an external mixer it might be a little different but here is how u do it)
First off read the MANUAL it is in there
second off i'll help you
(i use maximum buffer size to avoid dropouts..this can be an issue recording midi but should not effect you and your situation)
First make 2 blank audio tracks put a single drum hit in one (u need something with a fast attack)(drum hit starts imedately
in prefrences make sure you have "start recording on sceen lauce" enabled.
route the audio from the single hit into your system (the way your guitar goes..out and back in one of your inputs)
record enable the other track.
lauceh the sceen (both clips start one plays one records)
you only need to record one hit
Play 'em back at the same time...there should be a delay
zoom in on the clip you just recorded...you will physicaly see the amount of time in MS that you need to compensate. there will be numbers at the bottom
you take this number and put it into audio prefrences (little square waiting for this info under settings)
turn monitor off on the track you are going to record your guitar to
HAVE FUN
(like i said this is in the manual pg 56, pdf comes with the program)

Thanks for the reply - yes I did read that part in the manual and originally asked if that was the only way to get the guitar to sync when playing to recorded loops. Audio latency can be an issue in Live that i haven't experienced in other audio software
sounds like it is, unless i'm able to use the ASIO4all drivers or get an external I/O with zero latency
appreciate the help guys....people in the music stores have no idea what i'm asking and this is a good resource

I don't see how the asio4allv2 drivers could be an issue? Throw them in there, almost any old soundcard should be able to run at no more than 10ms input latency on those drivers. Go ahead!trigger wrote: Audio latency can be an issue in Live that i haven't experienced in other audio software
