I use Duet with my MBP and it's hands down the best audio interface I've ever had. I hadn't had a single problem with it and I get really low latencies compared to for example my Presonus Firepod. I can honestly really recommend it - the jog wheel works really well and is really really handy.
Can't tell you about the clarity of the preamps, I'm not an expert on that, but I can tell you that your room doesn't matter too much when you're recording with a Shure 57, because it's a dynamic microphone and won't pick up much else than what's near it (=your voice). Also, maybe someone else knows about this better, but since your Shure is a dynamic microphone, it doesn't pick up too much details anyway, so I don't know if you really get the best possible audio quality with it, no matter how good your preamps are. What I mean by this is that I think you're mic is the first one that might come into way, if you really want hifi-quality.
But, what I've read, Duet really has good preamps.
Apogee Duet Audio interface... Should I get it?
