Dummy (empty) clips and beat repeat causes audio to stop

Post by professorpious » Thu Dec 04, 2008 4:13 pm

Hello peoples,
Long time user, first time poster. I've run into a repeatable bug and I'm wondering if anyone has a fix. I've got two channels sending audio to two other channels with dummy clips (empty clips) which I'm using to automate the effects in those channels. One of the effects is beat repeat set to ins. mode. I'm also using a few effects racks from Tarekith.com. I have one dummy clip on each channel set to "reset" so that when I click them dry signal is passed.

The bug seems to happen when I have both channels playing and I'm triggering dummy clips eventually one of the channels will stop sending audio. It is almost certainly the beat repeat because if I change it from ins. to mix it allows audio to pass again. Also deleting beat repeat from the channel and adding it again will temporarily fix the problem. This is what I've been doing for a work around but I'd love a more permanent solution. I'm on a Macbook Pro 2.2ghz 4GB ram OS X 10.5.5 and running the most recent Live ver. 7.0.12

Any help will be much appreciated. Help today and you'll make a new BFF as I've got a gig tonight :) Thanks in advance.

What do you mean with "Reset"? Are you bypassing the Beat Repeat with a Dry Signal or did you just switch the repeat button off?

Could you post an .als file with this specific setup? No samples needed. I have no clue how everything is routed.

I'm guessing you either tweaked the Chance or Repeat button with the dummy clip.
If that is the case, what you should do is make a custom Dry/Wet and automate that.

Hey Hoffman thanks for the quick response.

Just to be clear the "reset clip" is just a clip with the envelopes set so that none of the effects are wet. it works fine when I first open live i can studder beats and then hit reset and things go back to normal dry signal. it's only after triggering dummy clips on both channels for a while and then going back to "reset" that it sometimes stops sending audio. you might have better like just trying to do it yourself. Here is a link to the ALS I'm working with now

You'll also need to be running live 7 and have these effects presets installed since that's what i'm running.

let me know if you have any luck reproducing this.

The Beat Repeat is an effect that works with a buffer.
Your "reset", doesn't reset the beat repeat. It just being set to different setting. Grid and Interval from what I can see.

What you need to do is place the Beat Repeat in an audio effect rack and create a second chain that contains the dry signal. Switch between them with the Chain Selector.

Its all detailed in the article I linked above. Or you can download the Rack here: http://www.covops.org/index.php/View-de ... -Rack.html

I'm having the same problem and I see that your solution works, but I don't really understand your explanation of why it's happens in the first place. It seems like a bug to me, no? Why is resetting the dummy clip (ie. changing the grid and interval settings back) any different than manually changing the grid and interval settings back (without a dummy clip). I have the grid and interval midi mapped and I've twisted those knobs for days without a similar problem, doesn't the dummy clip just mimic that? I'd ideally like to avoid creating that second chain (long explanation, but I have my racks set up a certain way want to avoid that change). Thanks
