BTW I got to meet one of the heads of Ableton. He said sales of Live were split 50/50 between PC and mac.

Maybe it's fun to bash platforms, but I don't offline, most of my friends use PC, and I never get into this sort of malarky with them about platform, we laugh and joke, and admit advantages and disadvantages to both. Why is it different online? :?

ah no, in point of fact it is a computer designed to be used by one individual at a time, thus a personal computer.
You probably wanna leave windows out of your pros column, it's not really doing you any favors. if you wanna talk about fast hardware then yes, AMD is making faster chips more quickly then IBM at this point, but only has been for the last 3 years. motorola chips had been faster then both intel and amd. you'd been using the slower computer for the last 15 years so if speed is all that matters, why didn't you switch to macs back then?

you know, this thread suddenly got more interesting. Machinesworking, why do you think that we get into this debate so often? what is it about computer systems that seems to inspire more devotion then most reasoning people have to a religion?

For me this isn't at all about which platform is BETTER.....

That is subjective!!!

However, I feel that if the Abe's could get Live running like 10% more efficiently on Macs I would never look at one of these posts again.

peace-out

I am a Network Engineer for a telephone and broadband provider and use Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Office daily. I don't have a PC for the speed or the joy of Windows, I have it because it's part of my day job.

You will find many Mac owners who also have a PC in their home or at least in the office. Mac users don't talk about their Mac because they feel like they are missing something from PC and have to defend themselves. Most are fully aware of the differences. They talk about their hardware and software because they enjoy it. Linux users are the same way. Most guys have dual boot or multiple machines running Windows and Linux, but 99% of the time they'll talk about how much they like Linux over Windows. Same shit, different OS.

i have a suped-up powermac G4 tower, a 12" powerbook, and an HP Athlon 64 laptop. pretty soon i probably won't have the desktop anymore.

i prefer osx. i'm not evangelizing it, it's not perfect. but i definitely prefer it.

but i more prefer a computer that gives me 4x the headroom for Live.

those are the real numbers. on my powerbook the 'live 4 performance test' numbers are 72-73%. on the HP it hovers around 18-19%. so regardless of argument about whether or not that test is efficient or representative of XYZ normal workflow, the fact is the same .als gives me a 4x change in CPU usage from one computer to the other.

at the end of the day i could give a crap about the hardware or the os. osx is far more a joy to work with; XP really isn't bad once you get it set up. i don't do much else besides music on the HP and i will likely keep the powerbook around for just that reason. the powerbook is prettier to look at; the HP laughs at the powerbook performance. the powerbook is a hell of a lot easier to carry around; the HP gives me exponentially more bang for the buck. i enjoy getting under the Darwin/BSD hood of osx occasionally, and i love the fact that you can do it in the first place; there's a lot of resources online about optimizing XP and keeping it stable. there's a lot of stuff in the music world that i like to use that's only on Windows; so even tho i use a x86 machine all day every day at work, it's the first time i've ever owned one.. all this new software is a joy.

but ultimately what i care most about is Live. and "It Just Works" SOOO much better on the windows machine.

This thread is already seven pages deep. If I answer that question bluntly then I'll never hear the end of it.

Based on my experience, the answer is simple. I tried running Live on my WinXP laptop but the Wireless NIC kept causing the audio to stutter so I had to disable it every time I would launch Live. I also hated the way my 4-pin Firewire cable kept disconnecting because the 4 pin -> 6 pin adapter was awkward.

I said fuck it and bought a Powerbook, 7200 RPM drive, 1.5GB ram, and an Echo Indigo DJ and Indigo I/O. My only goal was to have a reliable machine to use Live for live DJ performances - and for this the Powerbook is flawless. Not one single hick-up, ever.

To answer your question, Live is better for me on my Powerbook than it ever was on my Dell Latitude C840 with 1GB ram. I'm sure there are PCs out there where things work ok, but I'm burned out on chasing after technology. I just want something that works. I have a life and no time to fiddle around and troll forums finding the best PC. Although the Powerbook falls short on total CPU power, it makes up for it in reliability. That's a fair trade for me. I have my dual G5 2x2Ghz to use in the studio.

MarkH

Right, all the spyware posts just don't exist then?

I've experienced problems with both platforms, and have no problem admitting the benifits and shortcomings of either. Your posts in this thread however, are mean spirited. I normally don't resort to name calling but you ask for it? Why?

Let's see? comments comparing mac people to some juvenile penis competition, telling people to STFU.....

Image You graduate grade school dude? or did you have an accident at work?

Okay lets get this straight. I said nothing mean spirited to anyone on this forum. My comments were my general observations about Mac owners and what I interpret as insecurities when performance gets mentioned. They were directed at no one in particular here. The point of my post was to agree with adamjay about that particular pc and give the original poster who lives very close to me a lead on where to get it. I am not trying to "stir shit up" I'm not trying to offend anyone.
You, on the other hand decided (in your "positive spirited post") to call me an elementary school drop out and a work accident victim. Maybe you are the one stiring things up. Infact as I look back on this 7 pages of nonsense I see your name on every page. I never said Macs were garbage and frankly I could care less If they are or are not. I have my own computer that fits my needs fine. I don't need to puff my chest as you put it. I don't care if your using a comodore 64 with live. If it's working for you then that's good.
So obviously you misunderstood me. My whole point was that this thread wouldn't have turned into a seven page epic like it has if Mac owners hadn't fealt the need to defend there platforms. We all know the actual answer to the original question posted so we don't need to go there do we?

words of advice to anyone that feels some idiot is making fun of their gear (fuck i run a soundblaster for christ sakes Ive heard it all):

"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience. "

Why don't you read MarkH's comment above your post?

What is so hard to understand about the simple idea that speed is not everything to some people? For you, it is, but some people have different needs than you, really simple idea huh?

Let's see? your post said....
It's funny how insecure Mac guys can get eh.
not some mac guys, and that my friend is why I came at you, not because of your opinion, but because you made your opinion into a mac/PC flame post.
Others here with as strong of an opinion as yours, have this thing called tact, ever heard of it? They don't resort to pissing contests, or penile comments about others with opinions or concerns that are different than theirs.

I was going to post a rational reply to your penis size post, but I thought, why? Why try to be rational with somebody that is not?

Anyway I'm done with you, if you really believe that you can go on a forum and post nonsense like you did, and expect that there won't be at least one person to call you on it, then be prepared for plenty more lumps as you continue on in life.

Man oh man oh man. Try reading the above statement again. Here I'll help you understand. "It's funny how insecure mac guys CAN get.
CAN get.
Not do get.
Not always get
Not are.
Jesus man, how did you turn that into a mac/pc flame??? :? Face it, you decided to flame me for my observation that has nothing to do with Mac or PC's but their USERs. It's alright though because I accept your apology.

Personally I cannot understand how you think that quote is not flamebait?

Why don't you read MarkH's comment above your post? Is it because it goes against your observations?

OK you want my answer to your jibe?

Say a friend asks me which I would recommend. Well I would recommend either based on the USE they had for it.

A DJ touring the states? a Powerbook hands down. Apple care is nationwide, and has the best Consumer Reports ratings. The devices themselves also score highest in reliability over the competition. He can use it on the Internet without worrying about it ever affecting the performance that night.

A musician wanting to use it as a full fledged DAW? Well I would tell him to get a PC, unless like me he has mac only software he wants to use inside Live.
Desiduous wrote: this surprises me because i see a lot of people using macs at laptop battles where Live is the prog of choice
It doesn't surprise me, for the above reasons.
