It's funny how insecure Mac guys can get eh. It's like guys with small packages. They always gotta be sayin "it's what you do with it. whatever. I guess I have an obsession with "performance" LOL[/quote
Personally I cannot understand how you think that quote is not flamebait?

"Why don't you read MarkH's comment above your post? Is it because it goes against your observations? "]

Your right his observations are insightful and unbiased which is nice to see. It does go exactly against the type of Mac owner that I had described but again I will spell it out for you. I was commenting on certain insecure Mac owners I have seen. Making a blanket statement about a large group of people just because of there brand of laptop is rediculous. I didn't do that nor would I. I simply pointed out what is an observation of some Mac owners. (But definatley not you as I can clearly see now). You are a firm proud Mac owner ands that is what I like to see. Be happy with your gear. Did you even read my posts or just jump to conclusions.

BTW "performance obsessed" was actualy a quote I read in another thread in here from a Mac owner about PC owners which is why I made that referance. I wasn't trying to disrespect apple. They are good laptops that are reliable and have a way better OS. But whats new?
But be fair to the guy that started the thread and made it clear in the first page he wasnt into an apple. Don't push what he aint buyin. Start another thread and call it "argue with me about my computer"
I'm now going to test my new audiophile USB I just picked up 2 hpurs ago. I suggest you go have fun with whatever you do

Actually I'm working on a piece in Logic as I type. Honestly if Logic had gone PC only, I would probably be a "proud PC owner". I'm not really loyal to any platform per say, but I digress.....

Since we've totally highjacked this thread, let me know if you have any problems installing the drivers for the USB Audiophile OK? I want to recommend it to a friend but....
I had nothing but grief helping two different PC pals install M-Audio drivers for the USB Quattro in XP on two totally different machines. PCI installs went fine, but the USB drivers were hell! Wouldn't show up, wouldn't work, on one of the machines it just did not work at all! The guy who's machine it was, was a Windows expert! 8O Just crappie drivers!!!!:x

This was about a year and a half ago though. Hopefully they straightened it out, my friend is broke and needs a cheap soundcard, but I'm a little hesitant to recommend M-Audio. :?

@paws
I don't know, mate, all I know is that my PC using friends seem to be upgrading their computers all the fucking time, while my G3 is still going and going and going... as much as I need it to, anyways
hmmm, my mates G3 CPU goes into meltdown with just a few audio tracks, while my old G3 Black powerbook has no hope...

Sorry mate, I guess you caught me on a very touchy subject  , all I can say is that over the years Apple's products have always left a painful hole in my bank balance, even now we all just upgraded to the latest G5's, OSX and design software and still have stability and network problems... Which no doubt will be solved with newer software, which [guess what] needs a newer machine to run on....

This thread is already seven pages deep. If I answer that question bluntly then I'll never hear the end of it.
ok then ill answer it bluntly for the poor guy whos watched his simple question go for 8 pages even tho i feel like a dickhead for bumpim this again.. this is my last post.....

Q. can you run more vsti effects and instruments thru live on a
pc compared to macs? (in other words do you have more processing power for audio proccesing in windows at least as far as live is concerned

A. YES

Q. are macs and osx more stable than PCs and winxp.

A. NO people who cant instal drivers or who see xp crashin all the time dont know what they are doing and should go and buy a room full of hardware synths etc....

it's worth mentioning if your unhappy with your black G3 powerbook performance that processor upgrades for those machines are cheap right now. i think you can bump that machine up to a 1ghz G4 pretty easilly.

On the extremely inexpensive end - how does anyone think this machine may do as the core of a LIVE-dedicated computer?

yeah - that's kind of part of the question/comparison - ready to go systems (incl XP) vs. do it yourelf and is it really less expensive or not. I guess it is, but man computers change so fast it seems one should seek out the cheapest option and think of it as disposable- because it is.

On the other end - nice stuff:

i agree with Drush,
the reason i own the computer that i own is because of Live.
Live is my OS, Application, Hardware, and Software. everything i do musically anymore is centered around Live.

If a $1,000 iBook or Powerbook was getting as good results as the $1,000 AMD notebooks are, i'd own an iBook or Powerbook. but they aren't, so i don't.

its not Mac vs. PC to me anymore. its Live vs. Live, and i'm gonna take the Live that lets me do more.
-----------------------------------------
Its like buying a car, do you buy a car because of the badge on the hood? (Well, many people do, but...) I Personally buy a car that is effecient in every way shape and form. Good price at checkout, and good fuel economy, a decent amount of trunk space doesn't hurt either ;0)
If Live was Gasonline, and Macs were automobiles... Macs would be Hummers. Getting 8 miles to the gallon and costing you a fortune in the end. Macs, like Hummers, are great for many things.... Live (or in the Hummer's case - fuel effeciency) is not one of them.
If driving a hummer inspires you more creatively, then by all means... drive the hummer. But do not complain that it is a gas guzzler when you could be rocking a VW Golf 1.8T hatchback (PC) for half the price and gets 3x the fuel effeciency.
Certainly many folks can be creative and get the job done on only 8 miles to a tank, err... i mean Macs. More power to them. I'm not one of those folks, i'd rather not have to stop every half hour and fill up the tank (bounce down my VSTs) to keep on truckin'.

Not the best analogy, but i think it holds gas... err..., water.

I resent you comparing my inch thick computer with the four-hour battery life to a Hummer! ;)

I dunno. I just like driving this Mac better than a PC..!

This conversation is becoming so futile. now people are asking for linux.
I can already feel it comming. wich runs better? linux, pc or mac.
Then Ableton will release hyperthreading for Live. then apple is gonna release tiger.
fast forward to the release of longhorn......

There will always be something better. I'm sticking with the team that is always a step ahead.
