new hardrive macbook...re-instal live?

my macbook is getting a new (bigger) harddrive.
the computer guy says , he'll try and 'clone' the macbook to my external harddrive.
replace the harddrive and than copy this 'clone ' to the newharddrive.
This should preserve all my settings.
will i need to re-install live ?? do the whole code thing again ?

You won't need to reinstall jack shit. It will work just like you were working on your previous hard drive, except now you have more space. I've done it to nearly a dozen macs.

...and you could have saved some $$ by just doing it yourself with an external hard drive enclosure and the free version of superduper. Just letting you know.

i wasen't planning to do it either..
i was using our imac..for e-mails, work ..etc
and my macbook...for ableton only
Now she's leaving (after 8 years) and the macbook will have to do for both ..work + music. witch i hate ...

I was nervous as shit swapping out my drive for the first time on my MacBook "not built for consumer modification" Pro a few months ago, but man what a rush. I went from an 80 gig drive to a 320 and lovin life. Now I'm already itching to switch to a 500.

Do it.

The one thing I won't do unless I absolutely have to is a complete clean system and software install. scaaaaaaryyy, plus digging up all those serial numbers.

I just did this yesterday and no...you wont have to reinstall anything. Use CarbonCopy Cloner, its free.
