Controlling Guitar Rig 3 parameters in Live.
Controlling Guitar Rig 3 parameters in Live.
This might be a bit of a n00bish question...but I've got Guitar Rig 3 plugged into one of my audio tracks and I want to know how to set an automation for Guitar Rig. I tried doing it - under the name of the Audio Track (in Track view), I chose "Guitar Rig 3" in that drop down box, then Delay Time in the one below it and I adjusted the automation track, but it didn't affect Guitar Rig. Usually I can figure this stuff out by myself, but I'm stumped. Help?

go into the track in either session view or arrangement view.
click on the track at the top. i think double click.
you will see the vst or audio unit
it will have a down pointing "arrow" triangle "play-button" thing.
click on it. this will expand the VST or AU.
you will see many parameters for your effect. ...which brings up another issue: there is a limit to the amount of parameters you can see in Live's GUi.
i don't own guitar rig. but i do have the demo version. and yes there are a hell of a lot of parameter ther for you to mess with. sweet.
also go to page 213 Chapter 15.4 in the Ableton manual.
good luck.

good question.FrigginEH wrote:Is there a way to automate patch changes, not just alter the existing patch's parameters? Hoping to achieve this with dummy clips, but can't figure out how to do this....
i don't know really. i've heard, if it is possible, then it is through the "Notes" section of "Clip View" where it says "Program", "Sub-Bank", "Bank" etc.
but no, i don't think it is possible. it would be cool if you could not only switch presets on the fly using clips but also "morph" between the actual presets. like with some of the Ohm Force plugins.

something that might be helpful to know is you can map to the RK switches in GR3 and then map some macro controls to those within Live. This way you can automate whatev.
as far as the patches, what i've done is just had two amps in there, one for clean and one for ditry, and turn them on/off with the RK switches. So that way one macro moves you from clean to dirty. Definetly no morph going on there, but if you can spare the cpu, just use two instances of guitar rig in a rack and use the chain selector to fade in between them.

2.4 ghz Macbook Pro 8gb RAM, SSD, Live 9 Suite, Puremagnetik, Minimal Talent
Bummer. That's what I thought.
Since I have the extra CPU, I'll probably continue to run multiple instances and just use dummy clips to trigger the different chains as necessary while in session view, but doesn't this seem like a no-brainer for the plug-in companies to support?
@Jekblad: Nice solution! This should work well for many.
